EPC light and 16706 code

Featured Replies

I drove the car today and everything was fine I then stopped for about 10 minutes then when I went to start it again I had trouble.

Car turned over but failed to start . After several attempts it kicked into life.

EPC light stayed on and car was ticking over about 1200 rpm even though it was fully warm there was also some fluctuation between 1200 - 1500 rpm and car was very lumpy to drive.

Tried the cruise control and it refused to work.

Got home and scanned it and got the following.

16706 - Ignition/Distributor Engine Speed Input Circuit - No Signal

or Engine Speed Sensor (G28): No Signal : P0322

I have since cleared the code and the car now starts fine, EPC light has gone, it ticks over normally and cruise is fully functioning.

What could have caused this? Any help with this would be much appreciated

Anyone

The engine speed sensor is down by the oil filter where the gearbox and engine meet. It could be the wiring, the connector or the sensor starting to fail. Sometimes just cleaning the connector (or just unplugging/plugging) can make this go away.

Had a look today is it just in front of the shifter? Will give the connections a clean next week but I have drove the car several times since and not had a repeat of the problem yet so hopefully it is just a one off glitch. I will be keeping the code reader in the car just in case. Thanks for your help bud

Yep, that's more or less where it is look's different on a bare block, it should have a grey connector on the end of the sensor cable....

Right did a search on here and very little about it. However someone with the same problem code said they had no problem starting the car when cold.

Just took a 20 minute walk to the car, cleared the code again turned the key and bingo.....started first time :D

Is now parked up in its rightful place which I am much happier about, really didn't want it in a dark industrial estate car park overnight.

Will remove the sensor tomorrow and order one from VW if I can as they are next to where I broke down.

So my next question. Anyone know the part number?

Ok ordered new G28 sensor from Skoda today and should be here tomorrow. Current price is £85.57 including VAT.

Will update with a part number and results when I have fitted it. Looks simple enough though it will have to be accessed from underneath the car which I was hoping wouldn't be the case.

Good luck with it..... Hope its a cure ;-)

Ok I finally got the part today. Drove to the garage and picked it up then had to wait till the car had sufficiently cooled before I could start it up again

Skoda list it as an Impulse Sender and the part number is 06A 906 433 L for anyone else who may develop this problem.

Took about half hour to do and has to be done from underneath the car unless you have long arms and child size hands :P

Had to remove the oil filter to get at the connector which is held in place by a U shaped clip that it simply slides out of.

A 5mm Allen key bolt holds the sensor to the block and it is easier to remove the sensor first and feed it up through the pipework to unclip the connector from above.

Done several warm starts now and no repeat of the warm start issue's that I have been experiencing

Just to add to this after doing some research it appears a knackered sensor goes out of range when warm and cuts the fuel supply as a safety measure. Hence cold starts are fine and when warmed up gives the problem.

Hi Lex, Not sure if your watching this thread anymore, but i have a similar problem with my Fabia (1.4TDi '05).

It will turn over for a few seconds before starting and completely fail on occasion, once started it can stall after 5-15secs later randomly (stalls with symptoms of fuel starvation).

I get the same error code on reading as yourself, and this gets thrown up with a engine management error sometimes. Not got the code for the engine management yet.

Just wanted to know if this sorted your issue perminently.

I can more than relate to the frustration of it failing to start at bad times though.

Yes mate all fixed and no repeat off the problems at all, been good as gold.

Nice :)

As soon as it stops ****ing it down il get out and locate it on the fab.

Cheers:D

Hi Lex, still around?

I have some problems with my Skoda Octavia 1.4L petrol, EPC light on and the light fault in exaust control something,

Could be the same problem like yours?

clean the sensor maybe or change it, some advise please

PS The mecanic said that the problem could be the throttle body, but even he is not sure.

Thank you

Regards,

Hope this thread still going.

Keep getting 2 fault codes 17524 (which I can't find in book) and the one previously mentioned in this topic 16706 (P0322) Ignition/Distributor Engine Speed Input Circuit - No Signal. The latter code seems to be causing following problems:-

Car starts fine from cold. However, car difficult to re-start when warm after filling with fuel. Also occasionally stalling at traffic lights. Usually re-starts, but I get EPC light and car then runs lumpy.

Once cold again and/or reset codes, car starts and runs fine. Recently, car stalled and wouldn't re-start and towed to garage who replaced starter motor, but codes still appearing and car still running lumpy after 'warm' restart as above. Have been told it could be Impulse Sensor or Engine Speed Sensor oiling up. 6 months ago car had reconditioned engine as previous one losing/burning oil, so sensor may indeed be oily.

Where on Skoda Octavia (2001) are these sensors located? Indeed are they one and the same thing by a different name? Are they expensive to replace? What is/are part number(s) for these Sensors? Thanks

Hope this thread still going.

Have replaced engine speed sensor with a part imported from USA (which was much cheaper than over here, although import duty applied bumped up price!)

However, still getting 17524 code which isn't in book. Querying a wiring short??

Car running fine, no lumpiness and starts fine whether engine cold or warm. Was going to ignore this code and engine light, however, I've been informed that MOT being tightened up on from January 2012 and any dashboard warning lights will cause car to fail MOT.

As car runs fine, any quick fix, such as removing a fuse just for MOT, would be appreciated.

Any advise much appreciated,

Thanks

fixed at last

Did mine yesterday also, nice to have a car that fires up first time again. One thing I did notice that if it does start playing up if you try to start your car as soon you get in, usually fails to fire up, I found with mine if I turned the ignition on, let all the dash lights go out, always fired up without problem. Swapped mine over yesterday, was doing oil change also so while filter is out of the way access to the sensor is easier.
