Favorit jumping

Featured Replies

Hey I got a 94' Favorit. There is a problem with the car, it makes a 'jump' when I press the gas pedal, which is especially noticeable at lower gears. I cleaned the throttle body, changed spark plugs, but problem still remains. Anyone can tell me of the proper way to adjust the vacuum timing on this car? The screw on the distributor, where do I need to move it and set it properly?

don't think is the vacuum timing advance, my car had it when i got it and it was due to bad carb tuning, i dont even know if that screw is there for tuning the vacuum advance or just as part of the part setup.

before adjusting the ignition vacuum responce (witch is tricky) try looking at the fuel line

try cleaning the vacuum ports to the manifold, and checking the vacuum tubes are firmly seated

Bad pickup is more likely to be fuel or a misfire than an issue with the vacumn advance system.

If you use the search facility, Tonny and I have discussed various methods of dynamic timing an engine in the last month or so.

The fuel filter is new and clean, so do you mean to check the fuel pipe?

If the filter's new, the fuel system is probably ok, unless you've run the tank very low recently, and don't normally, when you might have a clogged tank pickup, but that usually manifests as lack of power rather than poor throttle pickup.

So I'd be thinking ignition system. If you've changed the plugs recently (probably the same time as the fuel filter) I'd strongly suspect a bad plug.

when mine jumped, it was because the idle speed was set too low and lean, so when you pressed the pedal the trasfer system would be to much of a compensation and give a very sharp torque lift...

since yours is probably a injected system then is more probably a ignition timing as Ken O'Neil sudjested or the throtel position sensor, maybe a bad conection on the sensor cable...

don't know much about injected, but i know that all engines have a trasfer system(from idle to partial open and hard acceleration), if its not working or over compensation it will give you two tipes of jumps, if not working, is a hesitation and a jump, if its over compensating is a jump then a deceleration

I have carburettor Favorit, I don't think there are any sensors inside, but can you please tell me more how do adjust idle speed? When starting the car after some period it stood, it normally takes some time and I need to give some gas otherwise the engine turns off, even in warm weather (The accumulator is brand new).

This presumes that the mixture is correct. You'll have to judge that from the plug tips, or if you live somewhere that still uses leaded fuels, the colour of the tailpipe interior (a very pale grey). If you run on unleaded the tailpipe interior will be soot black regardless.

To set the idle speed on a carburetor and distributor car:-

First, set the points gap as spec using feeler guages.

Second, go for a run and get the engine fully hot; we're talking about at least 10 miles at highway speeds.

Third, set the timing using a strobe light, or using a calibrated ear to find the highest idle speed you can get..

Now you can set the idle speed by adjusting the throttle idle stop.

Also, I'd not twigged before that this was a carburetor car, so there's another possibility, particularly if the pickup's worse on a hot engine. The CB condensor breaking down. Check this by looking at the points for signs of pitting and piling.

of carbs i know...

if it doesn't start right away is only two reasons, bad A/F mix, or bad timing

if there is no hesitation on the accelerator is too advance

if there IS hesitation on the accelerator is too retarded

If the rpm fluctuate is way too lean

if after warm up rpm goes down and the up at 90 degrees (full warm up) is too lean (but not by much)

the way i did mi timing is by advancing the time until i got the fastest rpm and then turn off the car, and turn it on without pressing the accelerator if it did not start right away i retarded the timing until it did, and then set the idle speed to 700 rpm with the idle screw.

now i just use a vacuum gauge, accelerate the car to 5000 rpm and check vacuum reading, then idle the car @ 650 rpm and match the vacuum reading by moving the distributor, it always starts right away without pressing the gas

this is assuming that the A/F mix is correct, if not

turn you car on and graduate the A/F screw until you get the fastest rpm, then lean the mix until rpm start going down and back up 1/4 to 1/2 of turn, then set the idle to 750-800 rpm if you remove a vacuum line you should see th engine start to stutter but very little without loosing rpm, if it does loose rpm then back up 1/4 of a turn more.

you'll have the mix very close to 13.7:1 there (but impossible to get dead on without a lambda sensor in the exhaust)

you also have to check spark plugs, incorrect gaping will cause hesitation on start, i set mine to 0.80mm and 0.65mm some com pre-gap to 1.1mm (too much for our 135L engine)
