Car Loosing Power

Featured Replies

I know this has already been discussed but just want to make sure that mine is the same thing. The car drives fine in town or on motorways when doing more than 75mph. When accelerating between 60-70mph it takes ages and the accelerator is fully down but the car hardly moves. Sometimes you can hear a winding noise when you accelerate. The fuel economy is good giving 56mpg. As anyone got any ideas? Your help is appreciated.

Thank you

Might help if you added a few details as to which model, year, petrol or diesel, mileage etc

The car is deisel, 86k 03 plate and it 110 tdi elegance. Skoda octavia

Air mass meter (MAF)?, you could try driving with it disconnected to see if it makes any difference. Sticking turbo VNT mechanism, though this will reset if you turn the engine off then on.

I'd say a MAF failure or a leaking boost pipe.

tried removing MAF, there was slight difference in terms of pick but not a massive changes. will clean the MAF with carb cleaner make difference? shall i change the air filter? i think that it might be leak on pipes because i can hear a whining noise when accelerating. dont want to take it to dealer due to cost and would rather try and fix it myself if possible

If you disconnect a dodgy MAF, the engine uses a default air map, so it should make a significant difference. Cleaning the MAF won't help if disconnecting it didn't.

If you're hearing a loud whooshing noise, that is diagnostic of a loose or split boost, vacumn or PCB hose, so that's a lot of hoses and connectors for you to check next!

Also, are you getting any black smoke, since a split hose could cause the car to over-fuel?

I aint getting any black fuel and fuel economy seems fine so far. Where is the best place to get hose pipe checked? dealer? or general mechanic

It's entirely DIYable, if you don't mind crawling under the car, and getting a bit mucky probing for splits in some of the smaller hoses down the back of the engine.
