Clutch or traction problem?

Featured Replies

Right I'm not sure what the current issue with my car might be.

1500 miles ago I took the gamble and put Falken 452's on the front wheels, with some Eagle F1 assym staying on the back as there only a couple months old.

Recently I'm unsure if it's my clutch on the way out or possible the current weather conditions and/or the tyres that are causing my problems.

When I'm running full boost ( ~240bhp ) if I floor it in any gear, including 5th, even from as low as 1500rpm the rev counter will surge ahead to around 3500rpm, and then seems to 'catch' itself and continue up the counter. The surging is definitely a new 'feeling', so I tried the only while stationary put her in 3rd and see if adding revs stalls the car or creates a surge, and low and behold the stalls. ( I shall try with asr on to see if she lights up the warning as soon as I can try ).

Upon trying the boost at it's lowest setting ( 180bhp ) there doesn't seem to be enough power to either 'surge' the revs, but at the same time neither is the asr flashing.

By chance I had to reverse up a long lane last night, and then I could definitely feel the difference in the clutch, but low and behold I'm not sure if the surge in revs afterwards was the same as previous or not.

Anyway I can definitely check if it's the clutch? If I have some free time I might change the f1's to the front and have a drive to see if the problem sill arises then.

Does sound like the Clutch too me.

But I'm no pro.

Any possibility that it's the n75 causing this problem?

If it makes any difference I have a Jabba boost controller fitted too.

The rev counter is linked to the flywheel (input side of gearbox) whilst in effect the speedo is linked to the output of the gearbox, with the clutch acting as a seperator between them. If both rev counter and speedo flare together then the issue is traction between the tyre and the road. If just the rev counter flares and the speedo stays constant then the issue is the clutch, as hinted at above, because the engine is able to build speed but isn't able to get sufficient purchase to put that additional drive to the box. It won't have anything to do with the ancillaries on the engine. The only other potential issue is that if the engine isn't actually flaring but the pickup on the tacho isn't working properly and causing you to see the flare in revs, despite the engine not actually doing so. pretty easy to discount that one though as you'll hear the engine tone change (or not) as the case may be.

Wow many thanks cloverleaf I shall take all that on board the next time I drive into work and able to give her some revs.

Random question but how cold was it?

The 452 do have a lot of grip, but can go off when you get reasonably into the negative temperatures.

From cold all the way into a 100mile 70mph motorway drive, but all done in minus temp weather of late, but I would imagine at that distance the tyre would be more than up to temp.

Yeah, I don't think it's the tyres and Ross knows what he is talking about, but I certainly found that the 452 went off badly at about -7 degrees (Car was showing that or lower every time I had the issue).

Not surprising as most summer tyres will start go off somewhere below 7 degrees and by the time you're into negative numbers they are as hard as plastic.

i have had the exact same problem and it was the clutch and the flywheel

skoda have replaced it and im picking it up 2morrow

630 quid :(

If it's out of warranty, I would be inclined to go to a local gearbox specialist or reputable independant just because their labour rates are so much lower (even if Skoda rates are pretty reasonable in dealer terms). The technology is all pretty similar across the VAG cars (and any others in the mainstream tbh) and even the quietest of back street garages will have the ability to do the job well. They are most likely to only replace parts that actually need replacing and will usually do their best to repair too where that is most appropriate. The only difference is the obvious stamp in the book.

It must be the clutch. It would take a lot more than 240BHP to spin the wheels in 5th gear at 1500 RPM surely. If by some chance the surface was slippery enough to allow this - perhaps wet sheet ice? - then I would imagine steering and braking would also have been major issues.

Had a quick test last night and although it seemed to have less of a problem than normal it was still there.

Not too worry I do have a certain someone who shall be fitting a ECS clutch and flywheel for me :p
