Question for xenon owners

Featured Replies

Is it normal for the drivers side light to be slightly higher than the passenger side like having two cut off lines visable? Should they be totally level that only one line appears? I had them out earlier fitting the nightbreakers and the drivers side got a little bump so i'm not sure if i knocked out the adjustment. Of course after fitting lights i would be more conscious and noticing more so i can't remember if it was like that beforehand.

I have zenons and the drivers side is slightly higher than passenger side.

Thanks for the reply cbr600

I'm on my second xenon equipped Octavia 2 and SWMBO has a vRS with xenons and all 3 have had different beam patterns

I wouldn't expect a bump to knock the alignment considering the amount of bumps and vibrations the fittings take every day on the road.

the nearside should be higher than the offside..the cutoff should be a visible angled line you can see on the road when driving. I suppose yeah, like 2 cutoff lines at an angle but the nearside should be higher.

I gather the nearside is the passenger side?

yeah, passenger side.. but I'm wonderin now cos someone has said said drivers offside beam should be higher!? just had to go czech! (get it)! but my car is now buried under a foot of snow!!

I'll get yer coat.................:D

Surely if the offside beam is higher there is more chance of blinding oncoming drivers?

Personally I dont like the beam cutoff pattern on the Octavia 2, the kick carries on up too far on the left and dazzles drivers if driving in the outside lane of the motorway for example.

Most other cars have cutoffs that level out as the beam aims towards the verge

It makes you wonder if Skoda just stuck xenon bulbs in a standard headlight

They certainly don't seem to have optimised the cut off pattern for xenon use. Thats why i've flat lined the beams on my L&K (can o' worms:rofl: )

I just read on another thread that if the lights are out of adjustment it comes up as a fault code on vagcom. But i suspect they would need to be way out before a fault code appears.

If the xenons haven't 'learnt' their position they will throw a fault code but this will only be detected on a scan. Also, every time the engine is started with the lights on they should motor to their lowest position and motor back up again in about 1-2 seconds, if they don't they could have issues.

There is a mode in VCDS/VAG-COM that allows adjustment and adaptation of the beams when the car is empty, this is so the controller knows where the beams are in relation to the data from the suspension level sensors.

Yes our Drivers side is higher, with a noticable wavey cut off pattern.

Unlike before when it was level, due to not being correctly checked/set at PDI

My drivers side is higher, which I thought was rather odd....

In think it's only that noticable because of the sharp cut off xenons have.

A halogen set up would be similar, but because the cut off isnt a clearly defined, you might not notice unless you were parked in front of a wall specifically checking/looking for it

I noticed my father's 07 Passat ( though not xenons) the drivers side is slightly higher too.

The cutoffs vary according to how close you are to the wall. If you set them absolutely level with the car at about 5 feet to a wall you will find that they are way different in normal driving practice. I would suggest that you visit your local garage with a beam setter and get them set properly.
