Advice for new VRS owner

Featured Replies

Hello there

After much searching I have finally bought an Octavia VRS. Just after Christmas I bagged a minted 2001 example off ebay with only 56k on the clock and full dealer service history. During the past month Ive been mightly impressed + the car hasnt put a foot wrong :) - I can understand why they have such a loyal following. It is though due an oil change and was wondering what oil you guys use and have often do you change it? On my old rover 620ti I always filled her with Castrol GTX Magnatec 10/40 semi synthetic do any of you guys use this oil in the VRS?

Cheers - Nik

Is it fixed or variable (Long life) servicing?

Mine was variable when I first got it but switched to fixed as I do mostly city driving.

Even so I use Castrol Edge 5w30 (Long life) and change it roughly every 6 months. Some may say this is pointless and costly but I have always liked regular fluid changes with quality fluids.

Welcome to the forum.

Ian

I've just had Castrol Edge 5w30 put in my car - variable service.

Thanks for the swift responses

I'm presuming its fixed as looking at the service booklet its been serviced roundabout every 10k

Cheers - Nik

Castrol Edge 5w30 here too, changed every 10k on fixed service.

Depends how picky you are. Castrol and Motul etc. are semi-synthetic or basically mineral oils. Motul and Castrol are full of rubbish additives.

A fully synthetic offers the superior protection you need.

Redline Synth

REDLINE High Performance Synthetic Motor Oil 10w-40

Silkolene Pro S (outstanding protection from cold)

Silkolene PRO S 5W-40 Ester Synthetic Oil For High Performance Engines

(N.B. No idea if these viscosities are right for Octy engines)

The point is, cheaper oils claim they're synthetic but they're not. There's very little regulation on naming oils as synthetic. You want a pure esther oil. Worth every penny.

Opie Oils (linked above) has a great reputation (no, I'm not affiliated in any way) and if you email they'll recommend something.

I think you will find Castrol Edge is a fully synthetic and at around £12 a litre certainly isn't a cheap oil

This is true, forgot about that. I stand corrected.

I, personally, worry about the additives in Castrol oil. I've seen tests where the oil foams up and goes an odd colour. But that's another topic :)

I use Castrol Edge, and change it every 10k miles. Can't go wrong.

I dont use any of this fixed/variable servicing lingo! I just service my car.

Mine's a diesel, Skoda dealer fixed serviced on Shell Helix (can't remember more than that, but since you're running a vRS you'd not want an exact spec for a diesel oil anyway).

Variable service is really intended for people that do high motorway mileages, and would be in a dealer every 6 months or less if they ran fixed.

When I had mine serviced recently at a main dealer (regular 10k) they filled it with their own preferred 10w40 which I though was a bit odd as I was expecting 5w40. Is that likely to make a great deal of difference?

5W won't actually be 5 centistoke viscosity for more than a few minutes anyway.

In weather like this it might load the starter motor a little heavier, and give you a trace of tappety noise for the first couple of minutes driving, but I'd be surprised if it did any real damage.
