Suggestions, Where To Mount Toggle Switch ?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Well i went ahead and mounted the toggle switch in the ashtray. Very pleased with it.

Here is the link to the work i carried out on Saturday.

(3) is possible, and quite easy to do. If you half-open the flap and poke your fingers around at the top, you'll feel there is a gap above the box.

The hinged flap just pulls out if you squeeze the sides and pull outwards, giving you room to drill upwards into the top of the box. You can't drill in the centre because of a moulding on the top of the box, but either side, up to about 10mm is fine.

Be very careful drilling!! - if you slip, you'll drill right up into some important electrical bits! Once you've made the hole, you can get access from the fuse panel, or by removing the light switch above temporarily.

Ya i like your thinking. I mite remove the hinged pocket altogether and drill a hole a third of the way down the back of the pocket itself.. And have the toggle switch sticking out "into" to pocket.. So all i'l have to do is open the pocket and flick the switch ;)

Why not use an existing switch location under the climate unit?

Or the ashtray holder - unless you are a smoker it is a pointless waste of space, easy to get out after you have pulled out the ashtray itself , just lift off the gear lever surround and undo the two screws. I have it now as a hidden switch area. Very neat as looks standard otherwise and the ashtray can go back with switches removed when it goes back.

IIRC the switches under the climatronic are not the latching variety so they won't be much good. Anything other than an OEM switch there will bugger up the look of the entire console.

I like the idea of fitting it next to the jumbo box AUX jack. A backlit latching pushbutton switch would be ideal and dead easy to access too. The only snag is the cable route although a good proportion of the route is accessible by pulling the gear lever gator up and out of the way.

Just after taking out the aux jacj in the armrest.. Between the access available from this and the removal of the gear stick gaitor there will be plenty of room..

It would be a tasty little mod.

YES !! would you believe i had that written in as suggestion (4) but i thought i was going OTT.. It is a very nice spot alrite. The only thing is that i would need surplus wire to be able to remove the ashtray clear and then disconnect using a snap fit...

I was looking at the hinged pocket this morning and i don't think i can remove it successfully.. I thought it might pop out of its hinge at the bottom and i could rotate it to remove it from its region......but no :(

I'm just in the middle of making a perspex holder for the creative zen that i will be using to stream videos... I'm going to replace the hands free kit cradle with this and have all cables and interface module in behind the climatronic. Just removed the cradle and i'm searching the garage for some perspex and my bloodly strip heater !!!

Heres a pic of the cradle that i am replacing... I think it will be a nice mod

What ya think ??

So you will have a streaming video player in the line of sight of the driver? I would not recommend that, far too distracting, not to mention illegal?

Yes but the idea of it will be for passengers !! The OEM system cuts out once the car passes 5MPH and rightly so..other systems have it wired to the handbrake light so that it will only work when the handbrake is engaged ... but i want the choice of having it on or off ..:D

I think it is no more distracting than having the sat nav with the backlight on !!

Just want to have the choice as i said and also the fact that one lad argued with me until he was blue in the face that it couldn't be done.. So there is a bit of "i'l show you" in it as well..:P

However i take your point on board, ANYthing like that would be a distraction !

I'd rather if this thread would remain on topic and not drift off into a bickering session about rules & regs.

Thanks for your input.

Tom

I was thinking of hiding an on/off switch behind the gear stick leather boot. So that I could feel through and just press it to enable or disable. Beat that for OEM look and reversibility. An stealth.
