Please Help - Nasty Noise

Featured Replies

Hi all, thanks for looking...

I have an 05 Mk 1 Octy VRS, I had it remapped about 6 months ago and also have an N75 J valve installed. Don't know if this has anything to do with the problem but thought it was worth mentioning. I have had no problems with the car at all, runs like a dream - well up until now. It started a couple of months ago, every now and then when I first started up the car it would make a horrible rattling sound from underneath when pulling away at low revs, like something was loose and is quite embarrassing! Soon disappeared after a couple of miles though/once it had warmed up.

In the last week though, when I am on the move accelerating and I put my foot down slightly and the turbo kicks in, there is a dreadful loud metallic rattling/grinding/clatter sound, like there is a little gremlin sat in the engine bay! It doesn't affect the speed or power but as you can imagine I'm really not pushing it now in case it goes kaput. It is quite loud and really sounds bad, no warning lights or anything else untoward - Any ideas before I take it to a tyre kicking money grabbing garage?

Thanks

exhaust centre mounting?

yep thats my first thought, i had something similar and fixed it with 2 jubilee clips, try searching "centre exhaust bracket

Yer I reckon your right about that one for the initial noise I have encountered, but the other one when I accelerate is completely different - Some how sounds more mechanical/enginey like it's loosing boost or something...

It can't be losing boost if you can make this statement

I have had no problems with the car at all, runs like a dream It doesn't affect the speed or power

Check the exhaust and fix if needed to see what effect that has.

Maybe a recording of the noise would help us

In the end this was the three manifold nuts that had become loose (for some unknown reason??!!) which was relatively easy for the garage to fix, no £300 manifold needed!! Thanks again for your replies.
