Worried about Turbo

Featured Replies

Hi guys

From what Ive heard the standard KKK Turbo is a bit of a Rich Tea biscuit when it comes to dunking. So what Im thinking is IF it goes pop could I drop a PD150 Garrett turbo straight in where the PD130 sits without having to carry out any other work ???

Will it run ok with the SMIC ? Any over heating issues etc ???

i believe the answer is yes

The turbo is a little bigger so the tuning will be a little out afterwards. For the rest no problem.

However, the KKKs may be weaker, but they really are not *that* bad either. The reason they go pop tends to be because the turbos are pushed to, and beyond, their limits by (re)maps. It is a weak point in that situation for definite.

When you say a little out... What do you mean exactly ??? More BHP ? Less ? More Turbo lag ?

Porsche use KKK turbo's

The PD150 turbo is slightly larger, so it spins up a little later (slightly more lag, although I'd be surprised if the difference was big enough to be worried about) and it could hold boost a little higher in the rev range.

However if the stock map is used, the stock map wont request more boost anyway so it will drive as good as damn the same :)

The interesting thing is that I have done a bit of research on the net and tdiclub.com users from the USA are not happy at all with Garrett turbos and value more the KKK versions for the same engines. According to them KKKs are stronger and more problem free than Garrett.

:rofl::rofl: loving that comment :thumbup:

its just the age old statement:

more power = less reliabilty

the more you push the turbo to its limit the more likely it'll melt...or in my case snap the shaft!! lol

Snap, excuse the pun .

My car isn't mapped, but the turbo did let go big style.

The yanks probably like the KKK due to it's rather non PC name

Nout wrong with the KKK though, if it's good enough for Porche blah blah.

A mate of mine has just blown the kkk turbo on his c20let vauxhall engine, not bad for 16 years use really !

If you dont look after it then its not going to last long

theyre fine, i was skeptical to begin with too, but 30k miles later of brisk motoring and its bob on, thats remapped too, just treat it right, warm up, cool down and i do 5k mile oil changes which is bound to help :)

They're both turbo manufacturers that are not exactly small - and it is mass manufacturered so tolerances may be a bit bigger potentially - at the end of the day though, both work fine, and if you want to push the turbo by remapping it will go wrong sooner if you dont treat it right.

A hybrid will be much stronger as it is less stressed and if bought from say TurboDynamics they test that individual turbo for you with proper warranty.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it, as if it goes let go, you'll have to replace it. If not, then great :)

No it wouldnt just fit on. The housing would need rotating

what would you be looking at ££ wise to get a new standard turbo for the vRS and has anyone had their's reconditioned, like new internals? Just curious of the price. Although mine is fine (Touch Wood), really want to spend as little as i can on the car from now on.

cheers

From Skoda well over 1300 quid it was a while ago from what I remember, a hybrid costs less if you push a bit ;)

a new turbo is like £1200 from the stealers!

when my turbo went was lucky enough to get a garret one instead of a KKK one for £200 used as someone had put a hybrid one on theres!

Got my TD stage 2 for about £900

What do you mean lol ?

The "snail" haha

Also known as clocking the turbo as the outlet points the wrong way when using a garrett.

Lummox - Am I right in saying about undoing 8 bolts?

Cant remember how many exactly but had to do it on mine, pain in the ar$e, as you have to adjust when everyting is back on and there aint room to swing a cat

Yeah about that.

I clocke mine ont he floor with no hassles before refitting.
