Remap about to murder my clutch??

Featured Replies

Hi guys! This is my first post, so be gentle!

Went to a VAG meet yesterday up at Knockhill where they were dishing out remaps for the princely sum of £200 . Got the map and that was fine. Drove home and later that day felt a really horrible shuddering noise in 4th gear.

I'm wondering if the additional torque is going to make the clutch slip eventually. has anyone experienced this too?

If so what uprated clutch would you recommend etc etc.

The car is still under the 90 day garage warranty so it's going in tomorrow basicly for a scout about see if they can spot anything.

Cheers, Liam

Hi mate,

Welcome to Briskoda, make sure to check out the Scottish Region.

What sort of power is your car sticking out now?

If it is the standard clutch then these are only good up to about 180bhp!

They didn't have a rolling road with them at the meet. But the guy said previous ones they'd done were putting down at least 170bhp. So i expect it to be in that region not any higher though!

Admitedly i did boot the tits off it yesterday to test it out. maybe teething problems??

Cheers for the welcome dude ;)

No worries mate, hope you had a good day at the mega meet and hope you get your problem solved.

Shuddering does not tend to be the clutch, but the DMF.

With a remap, the torque available is quite high. If you boot it from low revs in the higher gears, it will cause the DMF big stresses, and that causes a vibration, which sounds like what you're describing.

The map is probably fairly peaky in the power delivery in that case, but your best bet is to just make sure you're not flooring it in higher gears with low revs, stay above about 3k rpm if you want to drop it to the floor.

The clutch slipping would be different, you'd see the revs rise without getting much of a speed increase for a bit instead, and you wouldn't get a rumbling sound.

Hope that helps a bit :)

That's the sort of clear info i was looking for! Thank you very much dude!

That does sound a bit more like what im experiencing actually. So if im gonna floor it wait till im in the power band you're saying??

The torque comes in around 2k rpm, and it overpowers the DMF, so you get vibration. By dropping it in a lower gear you can put your foot down nicely instead & it will accelerate faster too :)

With a remap better to drive it like a petrol, drop a gear so your at 2-2.5rpm then change up at around 4.2k

Sounds more like "wait until you're half-way through the power band" to me.

Good advice, if you accelerate hard in a higher gear from lower revs the clutch can slip slightly. Accelerating hard through the gears, no problem.

Hope you enjoyed the SVAG meeting at Knockhill.

using your clutch instead of your handbrake if waiting on a hill for the lights to change will wreck a DMF too.

i managed to get hold of a solid flywheel for my old alfa jtd, i wonder if theyre available for vrs' ?

They are indeed but opinion around these ere parts is divided.

Any it seems from the various mechanics I've spoken to professional opinion on going from DMF to SMF is just as divided.
