help identify this sound

Featured Replies

Hi briskodians, a small problem has started to occur. Im getting a rumbling sound coming from under the car, it may be at the front im not sure. Ive searched the threads and sounds like a wheel bearing, but it isnt loud or grinding like. (you can only jsut hear it on a smooth road). Its like a mini heart beat, the faster I go, it goes but still doesnt seem to get louder.

Going to try and do some corners at speed tomorrow see ifit worsens but road noise can easily drown it out and also jack the front up, dont like using factory jack but will have to.

Should I take it to a garage or wait untill it gets louder so I can pin point he problem.

PS may get it 4 wheel aligned as its not bee done yet and slightly pulls to the left. 48k.

I've got a wheel bearing gone too, they drone at low speeds and start to disappear when going faster or changing direction.

Yep, sounds like a wheel bearing. I had one replaced 2 weeks ago, after my wife hit a big pothole. Drivers side front in my case. I am getting the anti-roll bar bushes replaced too, because I can hear it clonking over bumps since the bearing noise went.

It won't necessarily disappear, when mine both failed at a similar time, the drone at motorway speeds was horrendous, basically increasing from a mild rumble at 15mph to a loud whine/groan at 75mph. Also, you can pinpoint which side bearing has gone as the wheelbearing should quieten with load and therefore should get quieter when turning in one direction and louder in the opposite. Mine just made a **** load of noise as both were done in. Does it make the noise/change noise when at parking speeds/max lock etc?

Generally, if a noise is increases with road speed and not engine speed then it is something between the gearbox output and the wheels. If it changes dependant on gear then it's between the gearbox inputs/outputs and if it's dependant on engine then it's something between the gearbox input and the engine itself (flywheel, clutch, input cogs etc). Bit obvious but a helpful way to think about it.

I've got a wheel bearing on the way out aswell. Hope it will last until after Ultimate dubs!

Just to update you all, I went to the garage today for them to have a look, took it for a drive and didnt seem like the wheel bearing, but on closer inspection noticed the front passenger tyre had a big egg like bulge on the sidewall, which probably went partialy across the tyre. Dam potholes, so 2 new tyres later (only had 2-3mm left anyways) and rumble free.

Least I knew which corner the sound was coming from.
