Finally done....fitted 3" down pipe, CAI and Bluefin stage 2

Featured Replies

Today we finally had decent enough weather for me to crack on with fitting my PipeWerx 3" down pipe, ECS mount insert, Custom/Nuspeed CAI and Bluefin Stage 2.

I did take a load of pics so I'll do a write upon this but to summarise.... it really wasnt that bad, took me about 2 hours to change the downpipe and then about another 2 to sort out the other bits and bobs. All done with ramps and on the street.

So what was the full fat Bluefin stage 2 like?.......very quick.. to put it simply, I did try the map with the standard downpipe a few weeks back and while better than stage 1 I found that there was some hesitancy and a lot of heat, but as SC explicitly say that its for use with a 3" downpipe I figured I'd wait before I started to dig deeper.

I ragged the tits off the car for about 20 mins today and it really is spot on, no hesitancy or flat spots and no fuel cuts. Seems a good wedge quicker than it was with the standard downpipe and stage 2......and a lot quicker than stage 1.

I also have a Nuspeed CAI and a custom pipe to relocated the filter behind the front bumper.

Cant wait to take it out again tomorrow!

Will be fitting the new oem "D" valve tomorrow along with the forge quick shifter.

Well done on getting the work done  Bet it does go well!!! Can't do the stage 2 yet as I've not done the down pipe, but when money allows... The quick shifter works soooo much better when combined with the torque control bush IMHO

We had drizzle this morning, but I finally got the S3 Intercooler installed :D and get soaked :( Wish I could get mine on ramps! Would have made it a bit easier :P Still it's in, and I'm well pleased, hope to get out for a proper run tomorrow :D once i've double checked the coolant level!

Soooo looking forward to mine when i get around to it. My new air intake should be in the post tomorrow:), then its a case of order the downpipe and get some more speed out of betsy:D.

One for you though, i spoke to superchips, they can supply a stage 2+if you get a uprated fuel pump, they quoted about 270-275bhp, with 300Ibft torque:thumbup:

Ill second uncle bulgaria on the short shifter, mater had one in his vRS, and mine felt like a lorry gear lever after, so i shall be investing very soon, damn this site, it costing me an arm and leg.

How was it, fitting the downpipe and cat to the standard catback. What reducer was needed. Also what other stuff do you need as i will be fitting mine myself in work

You need her on a rolling road now though!

Hmmmm S3 intercooler is one for the future, wanted to get the basics sorted but I do plan to get a fuel pump, S3 intercooler and a full exhaust. Only thing is that I feel bang for buck factor is very much reduced once you get past the mods I've already done.

Will you do a little write up on fitting the intercooler? would be great to know what caught you out etc....:)

Eg My car should be making around 250bhp and that cost me £1000 but to go to 270bhp its another £1000....not such good value but we'll see what I say when I start getting bored.

As for fitting the downpipe, I'm going to do a proper step by step instruction with photos as I couldnt find any info on this job. Basically my downpip (Pipewerx) has a built in taper at the end going from 3" to 2.5" so you dont need a spacer, plus the standard exhaust has a sleave like clamp between the dp and the standard system and so this bit of the job is very easy.

The real bugger was that I couldnt get the top exhaust sensor off while on the car (bolt was F tight) so I disconected it and tried to pull it out along with the exhaust but it got stuck. After messing about for 30min I realised that I could remove a heat shield mmaking more space and slid it right out.

Once I have done the instructions, should take you 1:30 as I has to discover some stuff for myself :)

according to superchips you only need the fuel pump for their stage 2+ the intercooler is just a nice to have. so £600 instead of for the £1000 for 270bhp, seems a little better now, lol.

Fitting the intercooler is straight forwards enough it just takes time (took me 7 hrs )

All it is a case of is removing the front bumper taking the fans off and draining the coolant out of the old intercooler then replace the new intercooler fill up the coolant whilst pumping it through by hand with engine running. Once your happy the temp needle stays in the middle replace the bumper etc and job done.

Obviously thats a quick summary it does have more to connect/disconnect etc however its pretty straight forwards once under the car. I did it no problem and i have no mechanical Knowledge whatsoever

The Intercooler will not give you anymore power all it will do is make it more consistent. When at the last Rolling road day at JKM my car consistently made 256. something bhp were as other peoples cars usually made the most power on the 1st run. Mine was most powerful on the last run.

The short shifter is a nice mod. Once you get back in another car afterwards its like throwing a javelin to change gears :D

It's in the works :D. I just didn't get all the photos I wanted, so I'm linking my write up to another Briskodians install & we hope the two will cover it

Would have to agree on the time Carl  I started at 9.00 & finished at 16.00 (did have a few cups of tea & a sandwhich in that time too :P)

I was really worried that this was beyond me, but vrStu talked me through his experience & it confirmed much of what I'd expected. So if you are methodical & think it through before you start, you can do this

I'd also agree about consistency, but for me it was more about building in safety margins to allow longevity. It's fine going for the big numbers, but I'll settle for less knowing that it will last!

I've been really lucky in securing most of the parts I needed for my modding via this forum & it's saved me a fortune in parts :D. Add to that the help & experience that memebers have offered & i've also saved a fortune in labour too :D

Thanks to all

vrStu talked me through his experience

Yeah me to:D

Got to agree this forum can save you a fortune.

It can also cost you a small fortune. At first i blamed VRStu:rolleyes:. Now i blame Sibart.:D

Ahh well one day i will get KO4:D

Probably just in time for something else to come along and then it will be back to the drawing board:rolleyes::P:rofl:

ditto that,

The how to guides are definately worth following Im going to do my intercooler myself when i get one, that should save me nearly £250 pound labour.:D

hofmiester are you getting your car on a RR soon. I wanna compare the map on yours to the one i made at jkm 7th feb:thumbup:

I am going to a RR day on the 21st of March so should get some figures then......I need to figure out whats gone wrong too as while the car made loads of power yesterday...i fitted the "D" revision DV valve and its not right....massive turbo lag under 4K rpm

I'd stick her back on the c revision DV, you said it was fine before. Then enjoy your new found power.

here are a few graphs for comparison with your RR when you have it done. All complements of the last JKM RR day.

One vRS, no remap, just Evoms 207bhp

One bluefin stage 1 (leon FR tfsi), 238bhp

My vRS with just the stage 2 bluefin(no other mods) 235bhp

one vRS with Revo Stage 2 map as direct comparison to Bluefin stage 2 graph when you get it(this one has a few more mods than you though).256bhp

Looking forward to the comparison. i dont expect it to match The Revo, But I do expect to see a vast improvement over the curve mine produced.

He has TBE so it will probably yield more BHP as most stage 2 REVO cars with TBE go over 260bhp. The torque figure would be the one i was most interested in. Mainly to see how long it holds above 250lb/ft. With mine it holds 250lb/ft & above for around 3000rpm. Also to see what the peak torque is and how long it holds that

Hey Simon, your graph for stage 2 but with the standard exhaust and filter looks very wierd. Like power was suddenly lost after 4800rpm. I can say that driving my car now.....it pulls very hard up to the redline, it actually feels like there is more power above the redline as it doesnt start to drop off but I'm not sure where the limit really is on the TFSI.

I used to have a 16V corrado with a ported head, kent cams, headers etc and although the needle went to 6500K it would actually pull to 8K.

He is running a standard exhaust and intake though if i remember correctly which is why it will be struggling to breath higher up the rev range hence the drop in power

  • Author

235bhp at 4800K rpm suggests that with the right exhaust and intake the numbers should be good. If you look at the Revo stage 2 map with the extra mods the car is making 230-235bhp at 4800K so if the BF stage 2 follows a similar projection.......

Anyway, I'll know come March 21st

Just been out at lunch and that "D" revision DV definately wasnt right for my car, dunno if its faulty or just not suited to this engine.

That Car happens to be mine :D:D:D

Am hoping to get over 260bhp and a little more torque once i get TBE on there.

Carl:thumbup:

Im guessing the main reason for the dodgy graph is the std downpipe, however i had only loaded the stage 2 on about half hour prior to the test, so the ECU might have been adapting to new setting still, but hey,

anyways my new intake should be in post today from dan_v8_man and the downpipe is getting ordered tonight ONCE i get the ok off the wife. Shes still raging at me for Buying suspension without her knowing, lol(didnt expect her to go in my garage.)

Mater, you running the standard OEM DV or have you uprated yours to a Forge? I'm in the process of getting a few things done to mine (Revo ST1, EVOMS and a torque arm insert) and can't decide on if to do the DV.

I did have the forge one however i have relocated the DV to be at the same point as a KO4 engine as that is the direction i am heading. I did have a revision G in for around 6 or 7k miles on stage 2 and had no probs with it when i relocated the DV.

TBH as good as the Forge DV is im glad i have gone with relocation as my Forge DV needed to be serviced (new piston, spring, seals etc) after about 12k and the Relocated DV keeps the OEM style operation

I agree on the forge, its £130+ and needs servicing every 10-20K which means you have to remove it anyway and spend extra money.

£130+ buys you 4 OEM DVs and even if each one only lasts 10K, thats 40K miles at the worst case...

I've had 30K miles from my OEM "C" valve and 10K of that with BF stage 1 so you may never have one go.

Which DP are you going for Simon?

same as you my son, good value with good results.

Think it might be needed as my exhaust control system light flashed on the dash today??? So too the garage tomorrow to get that checked out. Result

When i just had a catback my tuner aggressively tuned my car. When i fitted the Miltek downpipe the difference was noticable straight away.
