Good vibrations

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have been getting a little vibration through the steering wheel lately. This seems to happen at speeds of 80mph+ and only when accelerating or cruising. I get no vibrations when the car if free wheeling or braking. Does this sound like a wheel balancing problem if so why does it only happen at 80+ mph and when accelerating?

It could be that one of the wheels is only slightly out of balance, so you only notice it when going so quickly.

Had a similar problem (also affected braking). Everyone seemed to think it might be the wishbone bushes. Took it for tracking to be done and the fitter said he couldn't do it until I got new bushes, so straight round to the garage where they could find no problem at all! Now seems cured - by driving it for 300 miles really quickly. I'm confused:( Its going for a service next week so we'll see what turns up

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be my wishbone bushes. Replaced both front arms and problem was solved. Would definatly check this out first.

I replaced wishbone bushes 2 years ago, i think they are ok still. Don't think it can be balancing because it doesn't happen when free wheeling.

Edit: After reading a few posts i may take the car to get the balancing checked, the roads round here are terrible at the moment!

try swapping the front and rear wheels, then you'll find out if it's the wheel balance.

The other thing is that some cars and drivers are more sensitive to balance than others; if you didn't get it done this way before, make sure the places that redo it use a "fingerplate balancer".

Update:

I managed to get time to take it to my local tyre fitters today. I got them to check both the front tyre balance. They took 15 grams off one wheel, so no weights at all and put 30 grams on the other. First impressions are its fixed it..... bad news is it cost me a fiver
