Throttle body cleaning.

Featured Replies

Yes i know this has been covered before but for what it's worth i thought i would comment on my experience.

My steed ('03 octavia vrs) used to stutter/hesitate at low rev's in low gears. Almost like you go to pull away and the car decides your not and shuts the throttle

I have since cleaned the throttle body (one can of carb cleaner and a gasket) and it has TOTALLY transformed the car . No hesitation and a really smooth drive... Top tip picked up on here, well done (whoever it was).

I'll second that, I found it really helped mine, I think some of the members on here now do it as a matter of course once a year as it only costs you a can of cleaner and a new gasket.

Is there a guide on how to do this anywhere? mine has the same problem.

Fantastic! thanks mate. Its bringing back memories of cleaning my Passat's EGR valve, although that needed a 24hr swim in diesel to get clean!

Anyone know if its essential to recalibrate it with vagcom?

If you don't disconnect it, you don't need vagcom.:)

...Did mine at the weekend, solved my stuttering (and surging) and is much smoother to drive!

Niceone....just bought some carb cleaner so a job for next weekend if not before.

I want to do IT ;) the coming weekend. My mechanic recommended brakes cleaner spray. Is this the same as carb cleaner? Safe to use?

I cleaned the TB on my 2001 2litre (AQU) octy and I'll tell you it's lots more time consuming than I've let my self understand. It appears that the construction of the TB and surrounding other parts is quite different from the 1.8T which is often described.

They're pretty simple parts yes but damn are they in a tight spot  In the end I decided that it was not necessary to unplug all them hoses from the TB as there are some on the back side which would've been an absolute pain to get back in place. I just removed the main air line and then the TB itself and cleaned it while them hoses were attached, no biggie really. After 200.000km it was surprisingly clean, only slight deposits.

I also replaced the air filter and put in a new set of plugs. Can't say which individual part of todays 'spring clean up' made the most effort, but the end result is very nice. Much smoother idling and running. Not that it was bad before but there is a noticeable difference.

Well, I finally did it today (after 1/2 year of planning ;)). The TB didn't seemt that dirty to me, there were some deposits, but they didn't seem very thick. BUT: after putting it back on, oh man what a difference! I used to have problems when accelerating at very low revs or from standstill, the car would stall and shake. Well, not anymore. Even though after half a year driving around with these problems I had gotten used to them and knew how much to "step on it" so it wasn't that bad, now, even trying really hard, they seem to be gone. Also, the car runs MUCH smoother when accelerating from any rpm, where before there was jerkiness around some "trouble spots". All in all I can say the difference is HUGE, although the TB didn't look that dirty.

What it hasn't cured is small idle fluctuations, but I'm putting that down to the sport cams I have.

I u sed isopropyl alcohol on mine because it evaporates pretty much immediately and seems far less harsh than carb or brake cleaner - I was concerned about what those would do if they got into the electrics.

If you don't disconnect it, you don't need vagcom.:)

what did do you not disconnect? do you mean just take the black hose of and clean from there?

No he means dont unplug it from the electrics:thumbup:

Anyway, the old gasket should still be good. I fitted mine right back. Car has 90.000kms.
