What Information Can The ECU Store??

Featured Replies

During a recent Skoda meet, a few people were trying out the "Top Secret" launch control on a DSG Superb. I remember someone saying that the number of times that the launch control was used is stored in the ECU somewhere so Skoda had an excuse not to replace your DSG gearbox when it goes bang.

What I wondered was what other information of an incriminating nature is also stored on the ECU?

IMHO If Launch Control is a part of the vehicle you bought, there is no way they could exclude/refuse the warranty no matter how often you've used this.

There are all sorts of information being stored in todays ECUs, question is what you are looking for... :)

On my Golf the instructions for launch control are in the owners manual.

It makes no mention about excessive use only that when you use it is is safe to do so.

Hmm. I've read a claim that launch control knocks 1000 miles off the life of the clutch pack. I won't be trying it.

The sort of thing I really wondered was whether the ECU stores any information about how hard the car has been driven, for example lets say the manual says run in the engine for 3000 miles at 3/4 throttle, but elsewhere on the internet it is advised to warm the engine up and then run it all the way up to full throttle, and for some reason the engine goes pop, can skoda look on the ECU and tell that the car hasnt been driven as per the manual, and then refuse to repair under warranty?

What, each time or overall? 1k off a clutch that really ought to be lasting well over 100k isn't that high a price to pay IMO...

Each time, allegedly.

Supposedly it's not that much quicker than just flooring it. Myself, I'm not taking any risks at all with my DSG box :).

The old maximum engine rpm fault was always my fav.
