Idle on VRS bit lumpy / uneven

Featured Replies

At idle, mostly when warmed up, my VRS seems to shake and judder slightly. Now yes, I know diesels aren't as quiet or smooth as petrols but should the car noticeably vibrate and lightly judder? It's quite noticeable, even visually seeing car shaking.

Not sure my engine is 100% healthy actually, I can never get more than 47-48mpg out of it even with a light right foot and it has the annoying 2500rev stutter, which is often very noticeable.

Change/clean your air filter, unplug clean and replug your maf sensor, and then drive it like you stole it for 1/2 an hour.

This might help, but if it doesn't it will at least make you smile.

Excuse my ignoance, but where is the MAF sensor?

I've been wondering about the ECU - I drive fairly conservatively most of the time with only the occasional hard blast. Does this mean the ECU adapts the engine settings to more economical modes, rather than more aggressive. I can't seem to even get the traction control light flashing anymore if I try!! Have I made my VRS into an old git?! And how much driving effects the ecu - if I drove it hard for an hour or so would it change?

Whereabouts are you?

There may be someone local to you with VAG com.

Differing driving styles affect the ecu's memory, but not to a vast amount.

Is it chucking out smoke? ( white or otherwise )

I can't see it being a massive problem, as the lump itsself is very robust.

Mind you, I am a complete muppet, and if any of my cars ever break, i have a team of qualified engineers awaiting to relieve me of beer tokens.

No smoke, and no massive problems - it does pull like a train like it always has so no major power loss i don't think.

I'm in North-west Kent, would be useful to know if any vag com members around.

Also, where is the MAF sensor?

Open the bonnet, it's at roughly 1 O'clock, sticking out of the air pipe thingy, on a wire. It's a block type thing about 2x1 inches.

If you unclip it, and use some dielectric grease on it ( maplins et al ) then re-attach it, you may ( only may ) notice an vast improvement.

MAF....have a look here mate, easier than trying to explain!

Mass flow sensor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Try doing what Mr Grumpy said and stick some dielectric grease inthe sensor plug and see what happens, they are about £60 to to replace I think?

EDIT: Sorry mate, totally mis-read the question, though it said WHAT not WHERE.......I need to go to bed now!!
