Worrying brake issue! Now fixed

Featured Replies

Well - was a bit scary today. Went to use the brakes and found them working like they do with the engine turned off. Went rock solid and basically stopped working. :thumbdwn:

Subsequently found my BMC box had gradually worn out a hole in the brake servo vacuum pipe - something I never really anticipated funnily enough  Now taped up and cable tied up and working well. Time for a new vacuum pipe methinks.

So glad I found out it was doing this when I didn't actually need the brakes!

Lucky escape.

I think that its always a reasonable idea to find out exactly how the steering and brakes feel if servo assistance is lost. I found this out originally with an old Escort van, I was parked queing to get into a carpark on a slope and my mate was away buying tools in Halfords, while quietly reading a paper I just let the handbrake now and again to move down the slope as the queue shortened and applied the footbrake to stop - but then the pedal went hard and I just managed to stop in time - lesson learned (it was first car with servo brakes).

Whats a BMC box?

Whats a BMC box?

This, and when attached to the stock plastic pipe that goes from airbox to turbo intake pipe, it clearly is in line with this vacuum pipe and the edge will rub on it.... Worth other BMC users noting this.

This is where it sits when used in the fabia, with the stock pipework
