Neo_VR has gone HD.. what to get next?

Featured Replies

I started off with Bluray on a PS3. I upgraded from the PS3 to a Panasonic BD30 player. I found the difference on the picture quality side of things absolutely minimal (this is to a 50" Panasonic Plasma) but found the audio to be better - seemed to offer a better sound field front and back - better channel seperation (dont ask me how!)

For me though the biggest improvement was that the fan noise of the PS3 (really only audible for the quite passages in films admittedly) had dissapeared. :)

Four weeks ago I found a new Panasonic BD35 going for a bargain price (effectively an EOL model). Just a little bit nicer than the BD30 but very very similar in all other respects.

In the bedroom I have a Sony S550 and this is my all round favourite - quicker to load the Java heavy discs (although the PS3 is still quicker!) and it just edges it over the Panasonic in terms of useability - menus and remote with backlight are great.

Any deck from the big players should be much of a muchness with the competitors and should do most things well. The main differences are going to be in the types of sockets/connections on the rear of the player and its suitablity to the other kit you have ie surround receiver.

EDIT .......

Well, if you convert them using Gotsent 2.3 or later they are converted to MP4 files and play away happily at 720p. .....

But is that a full re-encode??

edit. just checked more out about it.. will check it out tonight :) - have to admit the eggbox does do a pretty good job of upscaling even the normal-res stuff!

Not really, as it is to quick for that to happen ... I was doing BSG in around 4 minutes from MKV to MP4 Col and no real loss of visual quality when watched on a 42" Pan Plasma

Well after no sleep and not much deliberation apart from a scan over AVF, ive now got a Samsung BDP1600 player and Quantum of Solace :D

my decision for that particular model was mainly based on the two sony ones are pretty much EOL now the successors have been announced, though wont be available until june, and there was no point paying the extra for component outputs as ill be going "clean slate" for the audio setup :)

Well.. bit further on.. i think the BDP1600 is going back... i have a couple of problems with it, that others on AVforums are also aware of.

1) Sound dropouts... over optical and stereo over HDMI. over optical if you pause the movie the sound will stop and not come back... on HDMI there will be an occasional break in the sound for about a second..

2) lipsync.. at first i thought this was just the nature of the beast with LCD tellys, but because my audio is coming thru the telly, which corrects for its own lag... and there is no issue using any other source.

Am probably going to get the Panny BD35 as a replacement.. as RS cant get hold of the S350 :o

Heres my setup so far.. (until i get a decent TV-unit)

Going back to the original thread title...

...get a working player.
