My fuel gauge stays a t full for a fair bit then starts dropping after about 300 miles the light comes on when the tank is empty though. So wondering why it's doing that.

That sort of thing where the fuel tank reads full until nearly empty, or nearly empty even when you know it must be full (dependant on make and model) is usually the sender unit inside the tank.
