Smoked headlights

Featured Replies

I`m looking into painting the inside of headlamps black together with the indicators (not reflectors themselves obviously). Is it easy / difficult to do, I suppose they are glued together and are a pain to take apart but how much pain are they? :) I think together with grill surround painted black they would improve the look of the car especially when it`s black. Has anyone done this on a black car?

Oh the car is mk1 vrs :)

There was a recent post on doing it to a Fabia, so the process will be similar I guess. Do a search

and see what it brings up, or wait for some bright spark to post a link :)

I've done it mate, its a right pain in the ***, and I've only ever Seen 2 other people on here with it done, andeyrew and dsmithmobile. Check out my gallery there's a couple of pics of the Finished result on there. Also do a search for tinted headlights, there's a 3 page thread about them

I think

Couldn't a similar effect be created by using the polycarbonate clip on headlamp lens protectors? Giving these the "smoke" treatment has got to be far easier than trying to split the lens from the reflector and then re-gluing it after "painting". And they could be removed when you want to see where you are going at night;)

Not really as I wanted them look oem ish once they were finished, not just a clip on item, and how much hassle would it be to unclip them everytime it got dark? When painting the inside of the lights you paint all the parts which are not used to focus the beam etc

I take your point Mark. It was just an idle thought really. I have poly carb lens protectors which look good and wondered if a similar effect might be possible if tinting them were possible in some way...a bit like a motorcyle visor look?

OK you're right ...stupid idea :thumbdwn:

Would also be illegal I think

Would also be illegal I think

So are coloured sidelight bulbs but that doesn't stop people using them.

Very true, many things are illegal that people use on the roads, my numberplates for example, you just run the risk of a fine if caught

  • 1 month later...

i agree with mark its a right pain, but worth doing, saying that i have only done one, so the car has a black eye at the mo

Top tip is take your time (its taken me about 5 months)

and when you split the light keep your fingers off any thing you are painting.

good luck

and you can buy black indicator lens
