So we are all in the same boat. :orb_wave:

I don't think they should be like that but mine had worn gearbox bushes when I got it which the dealer fixed before I picked the car up and I always thought this problem was related and was something they should have fixed then but didn't.

It doesn't really bother me that much and mine is out of warranty now so haven't bothered to get it fixed.

Mines a little different. Somteimes 1st is difficult to engage but that has been true of every car I've ever owned (facet of syncro I thought) but with my vRS, it goes into reverse fine but it can be very stiff to get it back out of reverse.

Mines the same, I've found if you just tap it out it's easy, if you think about yanking it out as you normally would it doesn't seem to want too move, If that makes sense :)

Reverse on these cars is non-synchromesh, so if it's awkward some times, but not always, push it into first, lift your foot slightly, but not enough to actually move forward, push it back down, and try again. That should move the gear teeth just enough for a clean engagement.

Being very slow into first is probably a symptom of the synchromesh, or needing a gear oil change if it's done more than 50_000 miles (80_000km).

Hi fatty5000, that's exactly how mine works. Good to know it's not just mine. It's not a problem in itself just worried it was a sign of something else.

As for the first gear issue. I think that is normal too.

Cheers,

iep
