Rubbish AM reception

Featured Replies

The sound system on my Octy L&K is superb on FM and CD. However, AM stations, Radio 5 in particular are un-listenable.

The dealer told me that AM reception in my area is poor. Luckily my wife's Mazda stereo doesn't know this and recieves all stations clearly!

Has anyone any ideas to allow me to listen to the footy on the weekend on 5-live?

Many thanks.

Lloyd

Perhaps you should sit in your wife's Mazda.......................

Sorry, couldn't resist it !

Could be your Aerial.

I have always found the AM reception to be inversely proportional to the quality of the radio. My old £15.00 car boot special in my Morris minor was a hundred times better than the all-singing, all-dancing ones I have had in any of the more modern cars I have had!

Which head unit do you have? Columbus maybe?;)

The AM reception in my Columbus is worse than anyone could imagine. Thank goodness the rest of the unit performs so well to compensate.

Have to say the AM on the Stream is nowhere as good as the Symphony I had in the Fabia.

AM reception in the Stream is rubbish; plus IMHO the overall sound quality is poor.:thumbdwn:

Hence why I have an Alpine head unit (still on OE speakers though) and have great sound quality and AM reception.:D:thumbup:

An alternative (cheaper) suggestion; what is the digital DAB reception like in your area? If it is good, you could invest in a Pure Highway DAB tuner that feeds its signal to your Stream unit by FM transmission. You will then get 5Live & 5Live Extra plus a host of other Digital stations.

Had awful problems with reception in my Renault, and previously with my Astra

1) Renault had tinting which was metallic film, aerial on rear glass. Metallic shield over aerial. Not good. Tint guys said they would have told me that it was a problem. Right! (have been ham radio operator think I would have remembered them telling me)

2) Astra had problems when I fitted new stereo to replace original. Aerial had power feed from orignal head unit. Had to route new power feed to it from switched (Accessory) fuse.

I know Octavia has the little aerial on the roof- is this used for AM and FM? It could also be that the aerial is just too small, or that the preamp in the aerial base is dead, or not receiving power. Does Octavia also have printed aerial on read glass?

Any info of how to get a DAB OEM radio into the Skoda? I know VW do a option with Golf for a DAB upgrade head unit but noting on Skoda.

James.

I'm flabberghasted!

Didn't know anyone still tuned in to anything on AM....lol.

I thought everything was either FM or digital so haven't even tried my AM reception. I'll try it later.

Depends on the station you want to listen to; on a daily basis I only use 5Live (AM only) or listen to a CD.

Our local independant station (radio tay AM )is very popular in our area. they have an FM station as well which caters more for the "teeny boppers" .

Great for traffic info, news and local weather.

198 LW Radio 4 test match special

When I first got my Octy reception on the Stream MW and LW was brilliant - now I get nothing. FM reception too is terrible - used to be able to drive to work with good reception all the way now it fizzes and crackles so much I stick to CDs. Had a courtesy Octy for a couple of weeks - reception was perfect.

Hoping to get mine sorted on the last trip under warranty to the stealers

What does the unit report the status of the aerial as?

Could be the well known base corrosion issue if Ant=off

AM reception is crap compared to my previous car (Focus) - I mainly listen to 5 Live to & from work; am used to it now though.

Seems like it's the system used by Skoda - only thing I don't like about the car so far.:thumbdwn:

Now if only the manufacturers would realise the AM includes both MW & LW.

The (factory fitted) Columbus has great FM & AM reception  but the AM is limited to MW only with no LW, disappointing as I love TMS and will really miss it now :thumbdwn:

You'll have to get a Pure Highway to give you DAB reception and you'll then be able to get TMS on 5Live Extra

Interesting option, but kind of defeats the all-in-one-ness of the Columbus and goes back to the days of suckers on windscreens and cables everywhere.

If it's in the VAG system, and fits their radios then it should work.

We just need a part number, and if needed order it from VW.

I bought a JVC KD-DB101 DAB and CD Player for my VRs and it works a treat, digital stations all seem to work great and it sounds a lot better than the standard Head Unit for CD's etc, plays MP3's too. About £200 including fitting and leads, fascia etc.

Cheers

Brian
