Travelling abroad, sat nav question

Featured Replies

Looking for a little help.

We are travelling to Ireland next week, I entered the Irish destination in the Columbus but the route stops about 30 miles from home in Birmingham. Is this because the system needs to be told which port we are sailing from?

I guess I could just enter Holyhead port and then the Irish address when leaving the ferry.

Any ideas?

Dan

Have you disabled ferries, it should work.

I have planned and tested a route from my home to Luxembourg at it calculated all the way including the ferry crossing.

Thanks Manny

Ferries were enabled, however when I dis-enabled them and re-enabled them the route worked right through to the Irish destination.

Bit strange but I'm now happy!

Thanks again

Dan

Does the car with full european mapping then???

I thought you had to buy extra discs and that it was only UK that came preloaded

Columbus has full european maps, only the MFD2 needs extra disks.

Does it have all the roads mapped or just the main ones?

All of them, right down to small back roads and residential streets.

I can confirm that. My in-laws live in the middle of nowhere in the wild west of Ireland on a tiny little lane and it's there!

Dan123, Dave here Im from "the the middle of nowhere in the wild west of Ireland on a tiny little lane" as your relations are. Its not all bad.

Suze as for the maps the ones in the new superb (2007 map) is a little dated and doesnt have the latest changes. If you can get your hands on the one on the forums with the BMW map they are bang on uptodate with lots of detail for small roads etc.

I didn't say it was bad, I love it there! I was just trying to make the point that the Columbus has full mapping, believe me if my in-laws' lane is on there it has full mapping.

Only Joking .... Im impressed with the Navteq maps on the car. Have the tele Atlas ones in a tom tom and the coverage in Ireland is not as good, less detail and not as accurate.

My navman sat nav just had cities and the main roads between them. My new garmin covers everything, even a few non-roads so i've had to turn around! It doesn't work as well in London though - takes too long to make it's mind up about which way to go

Sorry Bryan, we're headed for Castlebar, a long trek from Cork. Last time I was over I had a nose around the Skoda dealer there, you guys sure pay an awful lot of money and for a lower spec car.

Same as everything else in Ireland :thumbdwn:

Oh well ,

How about €2,000 a yr road tax on the V6 Superb :rofl::rofl:,

Octavia costs me £210/year to tax here. Will be €530 when I bring it to Ireland :(

So that I can ruin my rims, suspension and bumpers on bad roads..

Suze,

Just taxed new Superb II Elegance 2.0L 170bhp (from NI - March 2009) in Ireland for €302. On imports it depends on the age. Cars after July 08 most diesels came down in tax and most petrols stayed the same or increased unless they were really efficient vairiants which reduced. Cars post July 08 use the old Tax. My old 00 1.9tdi 90bhp is between €500 and 600 to tax. Doesnt addup.

mines a 01 so will be judged on engine size not emissions which i'm glad about because it's one of the higher tax brackets here for emissions ;)

214g/km = €1050 - no thanks!

Just checked the rates again - it will actually be €551/year. Alot worse than £210 but better than €1050 :D

So if you want to drive a pollution machine like me, make sure it's pre 2008!
