DSG mystery

Featured Replies

Each and every one of the facelifted petrol 7 speed DSG's come with standard fit ESP & Hill Hold. However, with the 6 speed, these only appear standard on selected models. All L& K's, whether petrol, diesel, manual or DSG, have both, while all the vRS's have the ESP only.

Any ideas why??

From what I've read, the seventh gear aka 1st gear is a "creep" gear. Very high ratio. This minimises wear for normal starts and gives the ability to creep like an automatic aiding parking. However, because its a dry clutch unlike the wet clutches of the 6 speed box, it probably cannot stand a long period of stalled operation without overheating. Solution: give them hill hold (brakes applied until accelerator pressed)

I may be wrong though...

Ah, that does make sense but why in conjunction with ESP?

Obviously the L& K's get both being the flagships and vRS's get standard ESP from the performance aspect.

think the hardware for the ESP is required to also have hillhold,

esp monitors the different wheel speeds and hill hold has to do the same so if the hardware for hillhold is there then ESP is just a software job I believe

That explains why both HH & ESP are always in conjunction with each other.

Thanks Skodakid & Dan, between you it's wrapped that one up nicely.
