Cars to keep.

Featured Replies

I was reading an article recently about old performance Fords, and how IF they are kept mint and in a standard and unmolested condition, can actually go up in value eventually.

The Sierra Cosworth came out tops, with mint condition ones (very very rare) now fetching over 20k apparently. The rest of the range seemed to do pretty well too tbh.

I'm now toying with the idea of trying to pursuade the missus to allow me to purchase a Focus RS for 'pension purposes' ...of course.:D

More realistically, I reckon the Ford Racing Puma is the more affordable one to have and cherish.

Saw an absolutely stonkingly original mint XR3 (not an i) at the classic car show at Tatton Park a couple of years ago.

W reg (81) in Rosso red, 40,000 genuine miles, up for grabs @ £6000

Any other suggested affordable marques and models to consider as an investment?

I reckon even the vRS Octy and Fabia will have collectable appeal in the future, in fact anything performance wise seem to end up going back up in value eventually. Look at prices for mint Mk1 Golf Gti's!

I guess it's rather difficult to tell what the market for any given car would be in the future. If anyone could say with any certainty a car would go up significantly in value I'm sure some enterprising person would dry store some of them and bring them out when the price is worth their while.

And there's just something about a Sierra Cosworth that makes it appealing compared with other cars. A focus RS doesn't really look anything special and just doesn't have the same sort of appeal as a Sierra Cosworth compared with other cars on the market IMO.

You're probably best looking for low mileage garaged cars when they're at the £1000 mark and 10 to 16 years old or something. I suspect even the Sierra Cosworth went through a "banger" phase at one point and advertised at £1000 would be laughed at.

The 3 door Cossy went through its 'banger period' a good few years back now , you could pick up a nice one for about £8K....not now though!

XR3's and 2 and not holding their value as much as the RS's. A mint RS500 with fetch £21k+. Again a mint 3 door will get £13k+. A Sapphire Cossie unmolested you're looking at £6500+, most have been modified in some way or another by now. Prices for the RS Focus have dropped over the last few months to about £12k almost the same as the Escort Cosworth. Parts are becoming a problem on all models. But if you get a decent one they are a lot of fun. My last Saph was pushing 330bhp and very littel on the road would keep up with it.

It's too early to say what second hand prices will be like for the mk2 RS Focus.

Mk1 Golfs are slowly creeping up and Mk2's are stable.

Cossies are worth a mint if you break them too. A relative has a Saff 4x4 and the interior trim is slightly darker than the normal Sapphire stuff. If you want genuine RS parts, people pay an absolute fortune for them.

Street Ka will probably be a cute classic eventually.

The supercharged Mini Cooper might do well.

It's got to be something that people have good memories of or something that was a mould breaker.

My Dad used to know a guy who had a Sierra Cosworth in vacuum sealed plastic in his garage. He couldn't afford to insure it but couldn't part with it. No idea if it's still there.

this is my baby. and she's staying standard* - never to be sold (unless something very special comes along...)

My rationale is thus:

only 950 odd were ever sold in the UK. of those, the dvla only had a record fo 625 a couple of years back. they keep getting written off (becauseof the alumium panels) for the slightest knock, so they're getting rarer and rarer...

also, they represent a shift in VW's philosophy when it comes to GTIs. It marks the last of VW's "small + light = fast" view of a GTI - after this, they started sticking big engines in them... It is truely the spiritual successor to the MK1 Golf GTI, something that the press commented on at the time of its launch

* most people mess around the suspension on these things. i haven't. i have, obviously, stuck the g60ies on, but the original alloys are sitting in my garage.

Hmmm, I wander if I ask my Grandad nicely enough, he'll let me have that nice mint, low milage toally standard Sapphire Cosworth that's residing in his garage :rubchin:

Love them yes keep it standard. I have a 2006 MGZTV8 standard but will be supercharging soon, well they built one 385 model so nearly standard then.

My Moggy Traveller has been edging up in value over the years. £610 new in 1969 and now worth about £8,000

The Cons: Rattles quite a lot above 70MPH, can be eaten by wood worm

Pros: Fixable without a laptop. Swearing and hammer will fix most things.

Some nice looking cars there lads.

It seems quite an appropriate time to ask, has anyone got a standard original Mini festering away and gathering value by the second? 50 years old last week I believe, and they are fetching absolutely ridiculous amounts of money now.

Can't even buy a scrapper for much less than a grand.

I had both a mini pickup and van back in the early 70's.

Oh how I wish I'd kept them.:rotz:
