gearbox selector failure fabia 1.4tdi

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Yesterday driving to work the gear selector broke inside the gearbox resulting in the loss of all gears. The AA man who came out said this is quite a common fault for vw group g'boxes, is this true?

I couldn't find anything on here or elsewhere about this.

What would be easier fixing/replacing the selector or replacing the gearbox? i'll replace the clutch whatever.

the car is a 53 plate fabia 1.4tdi 5 speed with 147k miles

thanks in advance

Mike

Not that common but the odd few do break. Given the box has done 147K miles, I would fit a new or good recon box. Syncros are likely to be very worn at that mileage.

This actually happened to my VRS last week. I had a recon gearbox fitted. Total cost was £390 (Including Fitting).

The dead gearbox is out now and currently residing on my garage floor actually found the haynes manual useful for once. I'm still to get a replacement as i've run out of money until pay day :thumbdwn:

Anyway will a 6 speed 'box fit my car and would it be worth it? and any recommendation on where to find one for a decent price in the bmth/salisbury area.

Thanks in advance Mike
