Octavia 4x4 Gearbox

Featured Replies

I have recently purchased a 2001 1.8t 4x4 estate, the gearbox seems to have a mind of its own.

When changing up it will go into 1st 3rd or 5th,it really is pot luck ,there is no discernable difference between ratios.

Changing down is the same it will go into 2nd or 4th,all so very vague

It will not go into 1st unless I select 2nd, then1st.

It is nearly impossible to select reverse at all.

Could anyone tell me if it is the gear selectors or is the gearbox knackered

Any idea how long it would take to check the selectors, and what is involved, apart from the naff gearbox it drives really well.

Any help info would be appreciated.

It definately sounds like the selector mechanism. Check the cables haven't come loose.

Selector is right on top of gear box at the selector and get someone too select gears. The outer cables should be firmly mounted on the box and not move, but the inner cables should move freely. I would imagine it will be something very obvious.

These pics should help.
