Brake fluids

Featured Replies

I am going down the 312 mm route next week and decided to upgrade the brake fluid as well. Was wondering exactly how much fluid do I need for the complete change? What brake fluids are you running? I got a liter of that: :D

Not sure how much you'll need as I don't have a Fabia. I use Motul RBF600 as it's top rated but nowhere near as expensive as Castrol SRF.

I did look at it too, but have heard that racing rated brake fluids should be changed at least once a year, because otherwise they loose their qualities. Could be a pile of **** that, but didn't feel like spending twice as much for the RBF660. :) This one has a boiling point at 272 grad. Celsius.

Yes once a year as it tends to absorb more water

I've bought some EBC BF 307+ fluid . It's only Dot 4 but has a Dry boiling point of 307+ °C and Wet boiling point of 196+ °C. I think it's the best ATM and was cheaper than Castrol SRF.

How much do you (or a garage) use when doing a fluid change? Is it more than 500ml, although I bought a few of it bottles anyway.

Just for info:

Motul RBF600 Factoryline:

Dry boiling point of 312C/593F

Wet boiling point of 216C/420F

I've just read the back of the bottle of the EBC stuff and it states:

"For Ideal results the system must be fully purged by flushing through with the BF307+ Racing Fluid. Replace/flush through regally to maintain optimum performance. As a guideline this should be done every 3/4 weeks or 200 racing miles. Replace more frequently in damp conditions"

I hope this stuff is still suitable for road use, and 2 year change intervals.

Exactly my concerns for not getting the Motul RBF 600 or 660.

You will need 2litres at least, depends how old and how much crap in the old fluid. AMD managed to do mine with 2 litres but my brake sytem was quiete clean anyway.

Thanks for that! Mine is exactly 2 years old, never messed around with. :)

So, in that case, another question arises - are we sure DOT 5.1 is compatible with DOT 4 (the original fluid in the car)?

5.1 is compatable with dot 4, dot 5 isn't though i think.

super dot 4 is better than 5.1 also i think :)

Halfords 5.1

£9.99 for 1 litre and thats all you will need. Super 4 can be better than 5.1 but when it's only 9.99 for a bottle it's not worth worrying over.

Dot5 is not compatable with any other brake fluids because it is silicone based and is intended for classic cars which don't go on the road much. Dot 5 is very low boiling point fluid and is a bit spongy, under no circumstances should you put dot5 in a modern car. Not to be confused with dot5.1 which is perfectly acceptable and compatable with yer normal mineral based fluids.
