Handbrake cable removal

Recommended Posts

Once the cable is released from the trailing shoe, just pull hard from the outside of the backplate and try twisting it and wiggling side-to-side. Mole grips may help but be careful not to damage the cable if you intend to reuse it.

When you say the trailing shoe is that the spring caliper mechanism? All there's left on is the plate with the cable disappearing out the side, I got it to move about 6 inches this afternoon then no more.So basically it just needs a really good pull?

I meant the rear brake shoe (where the handbrake pulls on the arm).

So you have something that looks somewhat like this?

Just pull on the back (the bit not shown in the picture behind the backplate).

If the backplate is being replaced anyway, and you're still having difficulty removing it, I suspect a good smack or two with a hammer near the green x will help free it.
