Cambelt Advice

Featured Replies

hello everyone, i have a 2005 fabia vrs and it has done 30k, it will be coming up to its 4 year service in june, i was wondering will it need a cambelt change even though its only done 30k and not 60?

thanks in advance liam

My 2002 Fabia has only 25000 miles on the clock and on it`s last service they said they want to change the cambelt but i didn`t have the money to do it, so next month i`ll get it done £300 to fo the job.

I am exactly the same... 4 years in June, 30k and a 2005 model!

Getting my cambelt changed next month for £235 inc VAT. Just to be on the safe side!

Rubber belts can fail with age, so that's why Skoda is now advising to change it every 4 years or 60K miles, whichever comes first.

mine is going in tomorrow...05 plate and 45k

my advice, make sure you get the water pump done too

HTH

Yea, 4 years or 60k.....

You don't need to get the water pump done, I think the so called 'fail' problem is blown out of proportion...they had problems with a different engine and I haven't heard of any where the pump has broken and the belt has come off ( I think the main chance is that the impeller breaks inside and the pump cant pump the coolant enough).

I can understand why people get it done seeing the cam belt is off, but don't look at it and think it's mandatory to get it done, not everybody does.....

4 years or 60,000 miles leave it any longer at your own risk this is what skoda/vw/audi/seat recommend on the pd130 engine

My Fabia 1.4 16v now nearly four years old has only 15k miles on the clock but dealer says change cambelt as Skoda recommends - so I'm going to do it. My dealer also said "spend the money if you want" to change the water pump at same time as the cambelt but "it's a waste of money and isn't necessary". Fine with me!

I am glad that manufacturers change belts according to time as well as milage. My first car would have just had it's first cam-belt change at 60K after 25 years from new  Luckily the Austin Rover A-Series engines had a chain that does not need any maintenance.

Mine was done at 4 years and 35k along with the water pump. I got the old parts back afterwards and must admit the belt looked pristine with no cracks at all. However the mechanic said the tensioner can fail and jump causing severe damage. Who am I to argue with VAG and the experts.

worth doing, better safe than sorry etc
