aux belt change

Featured Replies

My aux belt is starting to look a bit worn so i'll be changing it at the next service.

Is it as easy as haynes makes it sound? the engine is a 1.9TDi 110bhp.

are there any hints or tips that i should be aware of?

cheers

Not sure if it differs, but on the 1.8T it's very easy.

You merely pull back the automatic tensioner pulley with a suitable spanner/bit of pipe, then slip a drill bit or allen key through the hole to lock it in that position.

Then you can pull out the old belt and feed in the new one, noting the route it took. I have small hands, which made it easier to locate the belt over all the pulleys, but with a bit of patience you'll easily get it located properly. Then just pull on the tensioner again to remove the drill bit, and then allow it to re-tension the new belt.

I'd give it a good inspection afterwards, to ensure you got the belt in the grooves properly.

so the tensioner's automatic, and won't need any adjustment?

I suppose the right side splash guard needs to come away, how about the wheel arch liner?

Yeah it's automatic, and can't be adjusted, which makes life easier!

I managed mine easily without removing the offside splash guard, and the arch liner wouldn't help anyway as it doesn't cover it.

I'm basing all this on a 1.8T though, so things might be different on your engine. Hopefully Ken will pop by soon to confirm!

Ken must be having a lie in today.

Looking from the top of the engine there's not much room between the aux belt and wheel arch. Guess it'll start to become clear as I start the job...
