iPod repair

Featured Replies

Does anybody know of any places or websites that specialise in iPod repairs, namely for a 3rd and 4th gen iPod? Just I bought them faulty off eBay so I could repair them and use them in my car :)

Apple do it, as well as CPW IIRC

tbh for the cost of what a 4t gen ipod is going on ebay in working order it's not worth bothering to get them repaired

Was thinking take a few of them and then combine the parts to make a working one or two.

Most are probably crashed hard discs or dead batteries, with a few failed solder joints to boot. All easy enough to fix.

As said though for the price you can get them on the bay it isn't worth paying a company to fix them IMHO

Agreed. Gat that pod cracked open. It really isn't so scary inside and they are pretty easy to tinker around with.

Not worth spending lots of money for a company to repair.

maplins do battery replacement kits with all the bits you need, dont know how good they are but did notice them in the store the other week.

Well I bought them off eBay (I knew they were faulty, before you asked) and did open them up and toy about with them. Even got a replacement battery from maplins as suggested, but when I try to sync them they arent recognised by my PC. I cant really swap them around either because I think the 4ths a colour screen isnt....but to be honest, as long as I can get the power issue sorted, access the hard drive and transfer/play music, then the screen isnt an issue. Id happily plonk it in my car, even without housing or screen. I did leave these to gather dust for a while but I really want to sort it now!

How olds your PC, does it support USB2.0, have you installed the latest version of iTunes.

have you turned the switch at the top of the ipod to the right back to left and hold down middle button and menu button at same time to reset it?

mannyo: Its about 4-5 years old, but it is USB 2.0 compatible and it does have the latest iTunes. I have got an 80GB iPod Classic that I use at work which is synced to my PC. I dont know if this is why its doing it? Its just last time I tried to sync the broken iPods they kept connecting and disconnecting like it was switching on and off.

smstext: Tried that but no response, even charged them, but no difference.

fubar'd i think then.

Doesnt Itunes only allow one ipod sync at a time?

Doesnt Itunes only allow one ipod sync at a time?

Nope!

We've got a 5th Gen video and a touch syncing with the same iTunes library with no probs!

have got a couple of 4th gens that I have repaired - battery on one and mainboard/hd on another.

Try the reset trick smstext suggested.

If you have the sad face icon, try giving it a shot sharp smack onto a surface (eg magazine on a table) - do a search on this -its a temporary fix though and just seems to reset the HD or get it going again.

You can also downnload a bit of softwaree from apple that re-installs the system (handy if it wont sync with itunes)

Also, I have found that despite replacing the HDs (at 25 or so quid a pop) they still die again - I am guessing vibration, and heat does them in (replacements lasted about 6 months) - so I bought an adapter that allows you to fit compact flash cards from ebay - was a couple of quid, plus the cost of a card - real easy to fit - just a ziff cable and runs like a dream - no more dead HD or sad face icon.
