oil change

Featured Replies

my octavia diesel is 2 years old in sept 09 and only done 5,700 mile, the engine is the variable service one so its 15,000 or 2 years, so my car wil be serviced every 2 years but i have been told if i intend to keep the car (which i am) because its all local they would have the oil done every 12 month or even every 6 month

what do you think:rolleyes:

If you're doing lots of short local journeys where the engine barely gets warmed up then it is more than likely that there is condensation forming in the oil which will lower its effectiveness at lubricating the engine and necessitating more frequent oil changes.

From previous posts on here the variable service regime is recommended for cars that do more than 15000 miles a year and go on long journeys. On your low mileage the services definitely need to be more frequent than the 15000 - 17000 miles / 2 years you get on the variable service regime, therefore a fixed annual or 6 monthly service would definitely be beneficial to the longevity of the engine.

You should DEFINATELY be on fixed servicing. Did you buy the car new? I can't understand why variable servicing is the default, it's crazy. It's no wonder there is so much mistrust of variable servicing when so many people are using it when they shouldn't be!

Agreed, variable is only useful if you're on the motorway all day every day. I'd be changing the oil every year at least (just after winter is probably a good time to get rid of the winter build up of moisture etc).
