Engine problem

Featured Replies

Hi all,

A quick question. This morning, on my way to my parents my engine light came on. I stopped and switched off the engine. I thought the engine light switch was faulty lol.

But no it came on as soon as I switched it on again. It then started to make a really strange noise. Like a fan belt hitting a cover. This happened with the car went into second gear. When I speeded up the noise went, but every time I slowed down the loud noise came back :-( . I think this could be an engine pump or something. The oil is fine with no coolant in it. No white smoke at the back. I'll be bringing it into the dealership soon as it's needed for work. I have a 02 Octavia VRS which has done over 120,000. BTW the bam belt was changed around 10,000 miles ago. I'm just worried about the cost though. I will be buying a new car ASAP I think.

Cheers people.

'bam belt' ? ;) ...don't go edit it now & make me look stoopid! :D

Dunno what the banging noise will be but you need to get it scanned with VAGCOM/VCDS to see what fault code(s) comes back for the engine light.

I'm, sure a more knowledgeable soul will be along shortly - good luck! :)

Na i'll leave it lol. yeah it's a bit of a nightmare. O/S/F bearing 2 weeks ago. Both front springs Friday. Now this. looks like I really need a new car. It's done me proud, but I feel it will die on me soon :rotz:

maybe your bam belt is rubbing against something...

sorry, couldn't resist! Have you looked to see if you can see what is rubbing?

Are your engine mounts okay? (Mine made the same noise when the left hand engine mount broke...)

But the engine oil light is on all the time, which is not too good. I just hope it's nothin major. I need every penny for a deposit for a new one(still don't know what car to get).

that actually sounds pretty terminal... like something has broken off inside the engine and is rattling around...

Get it VAG COM'ed... sharpish

If you are a member of the AA or RAC I would have it taken on the back of a flat bed to the garage. Best "light on and noise" is a belt off, Worst is "pretty bad".
