Boost Pipe/EGR Blank Question

Featured Replies

Hello,

I am fully prepared for a slap in the face for asking a stupid question but I don't know the answer so what the hell.

My understanding is that the EGR only opens for a small part of the time then remains closed.

So why do people when they delete the EGR, also upgrade to a stainless steel boost pipe? Where does the boost go?

I'm new to the world of turbos etc and in my head I imagine the boost coming up the pipe, trying to get through the EGR but it's blanked off so then having to come back down the pipe and out the exhaust?

Or, if it was the EGR that pulled boost through the pipe before, why have such a long pipe up to the EGR if there is no EGR there to pull boost through?

I've worded it in quite a confusing way but hope somebody can explain it to me

Cheers

The EGR is a vacuum operated valve. Open or closed it allows boost air to enter the inlet manifold. When opened it allows a small portion of exhaust gas to mix with the intake air. This gas comes from a separate pipe from the exhaust to the EGR valve.

Turbo has two sides to it, isolated from each other. Exhaust gas spins the turbo, while the other side of the turbo compresses the intake air to make boost.

I'm guessing that the plastic boost pipe coming that leads to the EGR comes from the intercooler then? So where does boost go when it hits the dead end that is the delete pipe? Surely it can no longer pass in to the inlet manifold as there is a blanking plate in the way?

The EGR delete is simply a straight through pipe. The blanking plate goes onto the exhaust EGR feed pipe.

As above basically matey, the EGR blank pipe purely deletes any fumes from entering the inlet manifold from the exhaust. The boost pipe still stays in constant flow with the inlet manifold and both stay open at all times.

But all above is still redundant without carying out the CCV mod as without this, crap will still gunk up your manifold.

Ahhh ok that makes sense. I thought the EGR pipe was blanked off and thus nothing could get through. That makes more sense now.

I plan to do the CCV mod and EGR at the same time :)
