Crunching into 3rd gear.

Featured Replies

Tonight, suddenly, and without any previous hint of any gearbox problems (save for the odd time where I have had to double dip the clutch in order to engage 1st gear) I went to change up from 2nd to 3rd, and as I did so there was a terrible crunch noise. At first I thought the gearbox wouldn't go into 3rd, but I soon discovered that if I held the gearstick forward (into 3rd) as I released the clutch, it would stay in gear and didn't make quite as much noise into the bargain.

I've had a scan through some gearbox related threads and I noticed that synchromesh and transmission oil have been mentioned. Can this issue be sorted by simply filling with the correct transmission fluid? I have owned the car from new (04 )and it hasn't had a drop in all that time. :rotz: Or is it more likely to be a fundemental fault within the actual gearbox/geears themselves?

My Superb is a 5 (forward) speed and has done 180,000 miles. Thanks for any advice.

sounds like you need new clutch plates

If it is the syncro then it's a gearbox out and strip job.

Are all other gears (including R) OK? If so then it may be the 3rd gear synchro.

Could be the clutch / dmf ,i've just had mine done ,the gearchange is really easy now , but i've always had some problem changing gear since it was new.

Every other gear is fine, it's just when I try and put it into 3rd I get a heavy vibration feedback through the gear stick, and if I don't get it in to 3rd properly it pops back out. I had a new clutch/flywheel about 25,000 ago.

sounds like the synchro dude sorry

I'd suspect the 3rd gear synchro and/or the selector fork. Looks like the box will need to come out.

Hmmmm, right.

So i'm looking at a repair to my current gearbox or a replacement? Anybody any idea how either of those options might pan out cost wise?

Yes, one of the two. Cheapest option is probably a secondhand box.
