Anyone changed a vRS gear knob?

Featured Replies

Looking at changing my mates vRS gearknob for something a little more Euro, its currently slammed on AP coilovers with some lenso dished wheels, remap and ump valve fitted.

Next logical step is gearknob, we've removed the old one, easy enough but the thread doesnt leave much in the way of replacements - anyone changed theres with any pics?

Looking at a dice one of the VW enthusiasts, or a pool ball, just doesnt seem possible as its not threaded!

If you check out the pics in Basil's short shifter mod thread, that is probably your best bet.

If you went for the Dice idea you could put a small screw through one of the central black dots on one of the sides, to clamp to the shaft?

Could even drill a small hole in the side of the shaft for the screw to go through the Dice and into.. If you know someone with a machine shop they might even be abale to thread out one of the dots for a grub screw to go down?

This should also work with an 8-ball but won;t be as hidden.

My only problem then is getting the gear gaitor to fit properly, it surely will flop about as i'll have to remove it from the gear knob.

I have a tap and die so can always thread the gear stick itself, its just a funny shape, its got that recess in it, i think its gonna have to be a case of whip the old one off and give it a bash!

Would it be possible to cut the old kn0b off instead of removing it fully out of the gaiter? Just at the top of the gaiter.. so the little collar for it remains but a new kn0b can be installed above it?
