VRS No power and then all power!

Featured Replies

I'm really sorry if this has been posted before, I have searched, the other posts complain of a little hiccup in the lower gears.... My car isn't really hiccuping though :(

I was doing about 60ish in 3rd and I floored it and nothing at all happened, then it jolted a bit, then a bit more and then pulled.

Then I sat at a junction and went to pull away and it so nearly stalled, there was nothing there.

On the move it almost feels like the turbo isn't working at all, it is boosting though, I can still hear it.

Not sure on the pulling away though

Can anyone tell me where to look first? Sorry if this is a repeat post...

Bloody car could have waited more than 4 days until it broke.

Thanks,

Tom

Bump!

Any sign of an increase in induction type noise?

Now you said that, the turbo is pretty loud. Could it be a boost leak?

I guess not though as that wouldn't affect the pull away would it?

Bump!

Give us a chance too get out of bed mate :rofl::rofl:

Sounds like a boost leak possibly the intercooler hoses if its noisy.

Other places too check are under the manifold for the breather hoses, have poke under there with then engine running and listen for a change in sound.

Do you have accsess too a code scanner ???

Some boost leaks might work like that, by opening and closing.

Other easy possibility would be the MAF; just disconnect it, and if the engine runs and pulls better we have a winner.

Sorry, I must remember not everyone gets up as early as me!

The car has been tested, it was showing 4 codes

P1570

P1128

P1297

P1137

I've just got to do some investigating now!

It's going back Tuesday to be tested, as the mechanic said, some of the codes might be old ones that needed clearing anyway so I've got to go back to see if any of them re-appear!

Thanks everyone,

Tom :(

P1570

P1128

P1297

P1137

P1297 is a leak in a pressure hose between the throttle and the turbocharger

P1128 and P1137 are fuel trim too rich and fuel trim too lean which might be a result of the P1297 code, if it isn't sure how much pressurised air the turbo is delivering it won't fuel correctly

P1570 is something to do with the immobiliser - could be an old fault code that hadn't been cleared

Thanks mate, plenty pointing towards the turbo then!

I'll have to see if any of the faults rear their ugly heads again on Tuesday...

Have you looked near the intercooler ???

Like I said if its noisey.

If it was one of the other pipes it would probably show a 17705 code.

HTH

I will check that pipe, thanks mate.

Took it out last night, it drove fine... Bloody thing, I wish it would make it's mind up!

Grrrrrrrr...

If it was one of the other pipes it would probably show a 17705 code.

The P1297 is the same thing I think, but the code you get out of an aftermarket diagnostic whereas the 17705 is the equivalent VAG-Com code.

It's a P.I.T.A. to sort out a 17705 :thumbdwn:, it could be something as simple as cleaning the throttle body or it could be a leak in any number of pipes or faulty valves... try a search for 17705 fault code for more details.

I've done another fault code test and it's telling me it's got a boost leak and it's running lean. Sounds like you lot were right!!!

3 years of practice does that! ;)

I used to have the problem you described when pulling away from a junction, and the 17705 code. But it's all fixed now and healthy, so fear not, it can be fixed!

This is what I changed:

-Rocker cover breather 'Y' hose (perished and split)

-Inlet manifold engine breather hose (perished and split)

-DV (nothing wrong with it though)

-N249 (nothing wrong with it though)

-3 pressure hoses between turbo and TB (nothing visibly wrong with them, but I wanted to be sure)

-Air temp sender in inlet manifold (old one was caked in oily residue)

-Coolant temp sender (error code popped up for this, probably unrelated though)

-Spark plugs (probably unrelated)

-Throttle Body clean (Try this first, as it's what made the biggest difference for me)

That list looks big, but there's nothing mega expensive on there, and it's all stuff you can manage yourself. I fitted a boost gauge too, so I could actually monitor what was happening.

Try the TB clean first though!
