Erratic mpg readings?

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

First post and a little cry for help really. Today whilst driving i noticed the mpg reading on the dashboard erratically displaying random readings. For example it could say 166mpg Drop to 54mpg down to 28mpg - up to 33mpg - Get the picture? Just wondering if this a known issue? Or somthing i've done? I've tried turning off etc a few times to no luck, i'm pretty new to the car and mpg is short to forum search.

Thanks guys! :)

You've got the "instantaneous" MPG selected instead of the average one ?

Yep the live one not the average. Oh and to note it would do this really fast and somtimes just display the "- - - -"

The one you describe is the live MPG reading. This is what the car is doing at that precise moment and refreshes quickly. The ---- you speak of is normally when coasting as this doesn't register as using fuel.

On the end of the washer stalk you and can use the rocker to change it to other stuff; temperature, average MPG (which is a more steady figure) and so on. Could it be you have hit it and changed the setting recently?

Thanks for your reply! It was doing it on two long runs today. Was just all over the shop pretty fast, i'll keep an eye on it i suppose. :)

Yeah mate, nothing to worry about. The average MPG is the one you need.

Better still, ignore the readout on the dash and calculate MPG from brim to brim.
