when do you check oil

when do you check oil? how long after a cars been running

Well I think that VAG would say give it 10 minutes with a fully heated up engine parked on level ground before checking the dipstick. Personally, as a DIYer with maybe more time on his hands, I'd leave it for an hour, but either way remember to remove the dipstick, wipe clean then re-dip to get the proper level indication.

Get the engine nice and warm, park up on a level surface, turn off the car (obviously), wait a few minutes for the oil to drain back into the sump and check.

ooo didnt know there was a right way to check oil! I usualy only check it if I run out of water in the washer bottle or the rare occasions when I clean under the bonnet.

I check my oil on a regular basis and always when the car is cold,

It doesnt use any but still better to be safe than sorry

Yes, you're supposed to check the level before you drive it when cold. Once a month is sufficient for me. If it's a new car every week, it's a neccesity as new DERVS consumme a lot more oil until they have a few thousand mlies under there belt

I used to check my oil every week and top it up every month with oil on my previous car. Now I check it when I can remember/ be bothered, approx 1-2 months, but it does not use any oil. Check it on the level when cold, normally this means at weekends.

Every time I pop the bonnet!

Usually when something's wrong...

Every week in that case :P haha

I check mine once a month, only when the car has stood overnight . This elliminates changes in volume due to temperature ,and more importantly that any oil in the engine has fully drained into the sump.I also check tyre pressures, water, and brake fluid levels once a month.

The Owner's Manual states that the oil level should be checked at regular intervals, preferably every time after the fuel tank is filled or after driving for long stretches. To check the oil level:

Park the vehicle on a horizontal surface.

Switch the engine off.

Wait a few minutes and pull out the dipstick.

Wipe off the dipstick with a clean cloth and insert it again fully.

Then withdraw the dipstick again and read off the oil level.
