End of my Tether

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Maybe someone can throw a few suggestions at me as I am running out of ideas.. I have a 01 1.6 octavia and some months ago the engine management light and ASR light came on and both stayed on. The car was driving very irregularly and the engine was revving up and down when stopped at lights etc, also sometines there would be absolutely no power when pulling away. She was due a service so dropped it into my local Skoda dealer, Noel Deasy's in Cork - never going there again - when I got the car back it was driving smoothly with no lights - for a day. Dash lit up like a christmas tree again, and revving etc etc. Another dealer visit (Toyota!) and the revving problem cured and lights re-set.. A few days later, both lights on again. So I turned to Briskoda, and have done the following:

Checked for air hose leaks and replaced one leaking

New temperature sender (checked old one, found to be ok, damn!)

New MAF sensor - performance and mpg much improved, ASR light went out for two days then came on again, engine management light stayed on.

Replaced thermostat , mpg improved again, ASR light staying off, engine management light still on.

The car is still sluggish at times, it feels like it is misfiring. This is a regular, but not permanent feature. And the engine management light is still on.

Any ideas? I dont want to go to a main dealer again as it has had main dealer VAG-COM twice and they didnt spot or suggest the MAF or thermostat, both of which were faulty..

Have you tried taking the throttle body off, cleaning it and then resetting it? :)

hi mate, I've been there and feel your pain.

Have you at any stage managed to get the diagnostic codes from the car?

When I had this issue with my old 1.6 I went to phoenix motors on prussia street (dublin) and while on the phone he had already diagnosed the problem as a faulty sensor. I can't remember which exact sensor fixed my issue ( sounds the same as yours ) and if you don't ring them I could and ask for my service history which may be useful to you.

I'm in the same boat at the minute mate, i feel your pain.

First the coil packs were changed.- Cured for 2 days.

Then plugs and leads. - cured for 1 day

Then oxygen sensor 1. - Cured for 3 days

Then a complete engine flush. - In garage for 2 weeks, Cured for 60 mile

Now it's in again having the engine stripped to check the rings and valve stem seals.

The problem is that I am moving to Europe in a week, the cars still in the garage and I have 1300 miles to drive in it when it comes back!!

Hope you get it sorted mate cos i'm getting a bit worried about mine

I recall that I came across a similar problem about 7 years ago with a 1.6 Octavia, AVU engine code. We tried a new MAF, which did not cure it and ended up changing the throttle body, which did cure it.

As the engine light is on, can you give us any fault codes that are stored?

AVU engine code here, cleaning the throttle body seems to be the next mission, will do it at the weekend and report back. Regarding the engine management light, should it stay on even after the problem is resolved if it isnt cleared using diagnostics?

Had the same symptoms on my 1.6, was the crank position sensor...

Rob.

VAG Com or dealer diagnostic tool should clear the codes. If you don't have access, disconnect the battery for an hour. This should clear the codes. If the light returns, then the problem is still there, and needs further remedies.

Try searching VAGdrivers.ie for someone local with VAGCom. I'm sure you will find someone happy to help.

Just had the call to say mine's been rebuilt.

It was the oil control rings which were all replaced. Looks like the previous owner neglected the oil service and the got so full of crap the were letting oil into the plugs.

Not too sure what to interpret here..!

The first thing I would do is replace Relay 109. You can get these kind of problems when it starts to fail.

You can end up chasing your tail, trying to fix all the random 'problems' that is causes to appear.

I think relay 109 is only on Diesel engines?
