30,000 mile service - what to expect

Featured Replies

Well Maxidot decided to tell me this morning that I've got 700 miles to go until my next service on my Octy vRS.

That will take the mileage to just over 30,000 and the age of the car will be 2.5yrs.

What gets done/changed at a 30,000 mile service?

I will phone around for some quotes - but on average what should I be paying?

In your experience are dealers happy to use/fit your own supplied parts? I'm sure I can get the likes of oil and filters a lot cheaper than the dealers want to chage me.

Thanks.

I just booked mine in at main stealers next week as my maxidot is telling me it's service time.

It's currently due it's second variable service so I enquired what needs doing.

I am having it switched to fixed and it's on approx 34500m (nearly 3 yr old) so they said it's just an oil change service this time so will only be circa £100ish

I am going to change the airfilter myself as a precaution.

Next service should be fun though, oil, filters, and cambelt :(

Best of luck

Damian

Mileage adjustment

Had my third annual done the other week, at Simpsons in Colne. I supplied the oil and filter and including it's first MoT, the bill from them was £95

Damo - on the 2.0T cambelt, I thought there was a longer time/mileage interval on it, then for a PD engined vehicle for example?

According to my log book the vehicles first service was at 14,141 and right now I'm on 29,548

So that is "near enough" 15k & 30k.

A question one of the garages have asked me is if I'm on fixed or variable service.

I'm going to be honest - I really don't know!

Is there a quick way of finding out via Maxidot?

Dont take this as gospel but i'm pretty sure that if you push the ODO button on the dash after you have turned the engine off (but not taken the keys out) it will display one or two things. I'm on variable so mine comes up with a milage then several seconds later a day countdown. If you are on fixed you will just get the days counter.

I've just gone back out to the car.

When I switch the ignition on (before actually starting) the display reads:

Service In

600 Miles

or

119 Days

I tried starting my car, switching off and pressing the button before removing my keys but that didn't seem to do anything.

But I will admit I only tried once :)

Would the information given as I switch the ignition on indicate variable?

I'm on fixed servicing, and as I neared the service anniversary, it popped up in Maxidot to tell me. Same type of info as you, XXXX miles or XX days.

I would have thought on interval, that only a distance would be displayed, as it's not time dependant in any sense.

Hummm.

Looks like I'll have to do some investigation then.

Maybe I need to try as two posts above again.

Just had one quote back from my closest dealer.

They say "Assuming this is the 2nd Variable Service - £200+vat if I supply oil myself.

So I'm thinking about getting one of the "Service Packs" from Opie.

I'm assuming that if this is actually the second fixed service coming up then the cost may well be higher?

Just in the process of getting oil and oil filter purchased as that will save money over the dealer and they are happy to use parts that I supply.

Just looking at our friends over at Opie Oils and under "Recommended" for my Octy are:

Fuchs Titan GT1 5w-30

Mobile 1 ESP 5w-30

Castrol Edge 5w-30

Motul 5w-30

Of these 4 oils only the Motul is actually listed as VW 504/507 specific.

So with that in mind - that would actually be the sensible choice?

Does anyone know if the other 3 conform to the VW standards or not?

Ta

*Edit*

A little digging around on both the Castrol & Mobil websites indicates both of their oils conform to the VW standards too.

So any preference or opinions on which of these oils is "better" or is it just brand loyalty?

You can't really go wrong with any of the choices above, all good stuff :)

I went for the Edge for my service last month; seemed to get fully positive feedback on here and the spec does mention specific design work with VAG and good suitability for the 2.0T. How much marketing waffle that is, I don't know :D

But yes, it fully conforms to the correct standards

Sorry Steve, just noticed this

I'm not sure tbh, but I do hope your right

Maybe someone else could answer this for us

Cheers

Edit: the guy in servicing told me it's 4 years or 80k...

And it will be 4 years old next year :(

Added info

I think you can tell weather the car is on fixed or variable servicing is from the sticker in the service book or on the boot floor, and it's the G** code. I would have thought that at 15K mile intervals it would be on variable.

Just had a service at Bickertons, oil etc and pollen filter for £122 all in

Very happy

However, they recommend I get new brake pads :thumbdwn:

And tyres, which I knew anyway...

Then it needs taxing and the end of the month...

Then insurance is due in July as well

The joys of owning a car :(

Cheers

Not bad matey - I needed an MoT as well, but that's not bad going for an all-inclusive smaller service.

But everything else - yes, good isn't it! Nice when it all comes at once

Steve

It seems never ending Steve,

I forgot to add it's having an Mot next week as well, so that could be another £50

Plus a new jumbo box fitted and the rattling passenger seat cured, but thankfully those two are warranty work

Cheers

Damian
