Is a 4 year old Automatic petrol DSG?

Featured Replies

I'm thinking about a 4 year old Automatic 2 litre petrol Estate with 16000 miles that's for sale nearby. We need an auto for my wife's dodgy left knee.Does anyone know if one of that age is DSG or an old fashioned auto box and, if so, are they heavy on petrol please? I thought about waiting to see if an auto diesel comes up but here in Guernsey it's all short journeys except on holiday and I think I read that this can cause the diesels problems. can anyone confirm that please? Thanks in advance Keith

not sure about the gear box, your right to go for a petrol rather than a diesel. normally the DSG's say DSG on top of the Gear Selector but i don't know if thats any gurantee your looking at a slush box if it isnt there

Thanks, I've arranged to try it tomorrow so i hope I'll find out then. I'm just a bit concerned that if it's a torque converter box, it will be very thirsty.

Yep , a 2 litre petrol auto estate won't be an economical car.

if you've driven a DSG you can tell, they dont rev as high in gear as a torque converter box, and just they way they pull away, everything feels a lot more connected like in a manual

Thanks everybody, I'll see what I think of it tomorrow.

i thought the old 2.0l petrol units were all on a tiptronic auto and not DSG (diesel only had DSG)? Only the newer vrs 2.0t has the DSG in the octavia range doesnt it?

EDIT< and the new 1.4tsi (and 1.8???) DSG has it of course

Now I am confused. I thought DSG was another name for tiptronic.

not in this sense for Skoda, if anyone has access to a PDF of one of the old brochures it should confirm it. Ive got one but its on the home computer so cant check until later.

just found this below from bahnstormer which should explain it

from this thread - http://briskoda.net/octavia-ii/auto-tip-auto-dsg-what-goes-what-engine/133479/

I can tell you this much;

Tiptronic - is a traditional automatic gearbox with torque converter and manual selection ability (tiptronic) - this has been/is available on petrol engine Octavias e.g. 1.6mpi 102bhp, 1.6FSI 115bhp and 2.0FSI 150bhp but not on the 2.0TFSI 200bhp vRS.

DSG - is the VAG group twin clutch preselect automated manual, rated by many as the best of its type - this is/has been available on diesel engine Octavias e.g. 1.9TDI PD 105bhp and 2.0TDI PD 140bhp but not the 2.0TDI PD 170 vRS.

For the 2009 model year both the 2.0TFSI 200bhp and 2.0TDI CR170 bhp vRS are now available with the DSG gearbox.

Does this help?

A 4 year old petrol auto will definitely be a tiptronic box.

My 2006 brochure shows the following mpg figures for the 2.0 auto estate:

Urban : 23.7

Extra Urban : 44.1

Combined : 33.6

CO2 emissions : 202 g/km

Prof

CO2 emissions : 202 g/km

Mmm-hoy, moisen gayne and glaiven!

Its very simple to tell once you see the car, DSG boxes have DSG on the gearchange.

I would expect the car to be a standard autobox, ie torque converter.

Thanks everyone, I think it's going to be too thirsty for me. I think I'll wait a bit until I can get a DSG version.
