Remaps.." I'll try and keep it Simple "..........

Featured Replies

....I've read loads of threads/posts on remaps and there's one thing I don't quite understand. Some generic remaps state that they can give you an increase of 30 BHP to take your car up to 160 BHP. I've also read that some Fabia Vrs's come from the factory with up to 140/145 BHP...........So If you go for a generic remap do you actually get only 160 BHP (could be an increase of only 15 BHP ) or do you get the Full 30 BHP so you end up with 175 BHP. As I understand it the same generic remap may be used on a number of engines so if some engines produce only 130 BHP, some 140 BHP and some 145 " Do they all end up with 160 or will every one be Increased by the Said 30 BHP "....................." Very confusing" That 's why some people claim that there car doesn't seem any/much quicker after a remap as the car was producing 145 BHP in the first place.................Does all that make sense?????........My latest Vrs seems a lot quicker than my old Yellow one and this ones not remapped ( old one was Supperchipped )

You are right, a remap to 160bhp can in reality be increase of only 15bhp. more torque is usually available as well. It all depends on how well run in the engine is, the air temperature, type of fuel in your tank, lots of variables here.

Thats why it is best to have a custom remap for more power, torque, efficiency, and the engine will sound quieter and smoother.

I'm not sure how much relevance this has but here goes.

My car PD130 ASZ - Generic Jabba Remap (174bhp 320ftlb)

SWMBOs Car Fabia vRS PD130 BLT - No Remap (130bhp 229ftlb (book figures) Not been RR'd)

My car feels very relaxed to drive, the map isn't agressive yet if you want to drive quickly from 2000rpm there is a very strong hard pull right upto around 3,300rpm when it starts to feel a little asthmatic but still pulls very well

SWMBO's car feels quite agressive and from 2,200rpm and feels to pull as well as mine from 2,200rpm upto about 3,000rpm then the lack of bhp is noticable as it is very asthmatic and encourages you to change up gear to make use of the torque again.

I know this isn't a fair comparison given that my Octavia is approx 140kg's heavier than the fabia vrs and I didn't know what my Octavia was producing power wise prior to the remap but I noticed a massive difference in both torque and high end grunt after the remap.

I think the big difference and what you've probably noticed is the difference in engine codes and gone from a ASZ(euro3) to a BLT(euro4) engine. I have read on here somewhere that the gearboxes between the 2 engines on the Fabia vrs was different also but I'm not sure if the difference to the ratios was related to all the gears or just 6th.

If SWMBO will let me I might run her fabia at the July RR day at Awesome just to get a baseline for future work :) :)

There will be some variation in power between standard engines - partly from how they have been driven and run in , and partly just the luck of the draw.

The same engine tested on several rolling roads will also end up with different figures as some are more optimistic than others.

The only accurate way to measure the improvement from a remap is to compare a before and after run on the same dyno and look at the percentage gains.

Many of the more impressive post-remap figures came from Jabbasport , but they also seemed to get the best pre-remap figures as well. An optimistic dyno seems to be the case here.

A 30bhp gain on a standard 130bhp engine from just a remap isn't unrealistic though.

Agreed, Jabbasport used to have a reputation for High RR figures, the figures I quoted above are from Awesomes RR as the generic map at Jabbasport doesn't get you a dyno run.

One of the desired characteristics of a remap is a long smooth torque curve. Some of the less efficient maps have a sudden surge in power to give you the impression that they are so much more powerful.

The "OMG! - sudden climax" school if you will...

Smooth prolonged delivery of higher torque is what is more useful in driving briskly.

In a personal chat with the one tuner I know, he said that he used to adjust and change maps on the way to and back from work on his Polo 1.9TDI. I got the benefit of the same final map (Quote: "plus tricks"), optimised for larger injectors and hybrid turbo.

Newer engines are more and more environmentally friendly and less mentally satisfying IMHO....
