Vrs Road Noise

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

A mate of mine is selling his 08 Vrs due to road noise.

I thought road noise was a common complaint with skoda in general* but he reckons this is the first time he's had an issue... (3rd octavia, first Vrs)

*Apologies for the above.

I've never spent any real time in skoda's so can't comment more than what i've read and heard.

Has anyone with a skoda been driven to distraction by this?

He's not a guy to act rashly so it must be bad for him to decide to sell.

Third set of tyres btw. this set bought specifically for quietness but no real improvements.

Could it be anything else causing this, camber settings etc?

Thoughts appreciated,

Blackbug.

Could be a number of things really,

The larger wheel/tyre combo will increase road noise, but a common cause of roadnoise is tyres. Changing tyres can often lead to a much quieter car, as long as you get quiet ones of course. Its all in the tread pattern.

I think that road noise is standard equipment on the vRS. I went for a ride in a Passat TFSI the other day and there was very little road noise. However i was disappointed with the quality of the interior as plastic parts were not up to par.

Selling over road/tyre noise?!

How's the wear on the tyres? Even?

Also, do a search for the revised suspension alignment settings and get these checked against current settings with a specialist. Note that if alterations are required and it's also found that tyre wear is uneven, it's possible that the noise won't disappear/improve until fresh rubber's been fitted.

Would he consider soundproofing?

Bound to be cheaper than replacing the car?

Have a 57 1.8TSI EleganceHB :Bridgestone ER300s -original -very noisy on course road surface(like here in Norfolk) Hopefully will find something better when they are changed as I know where he's coming from. :( Any suggestions????

My Golf is far superior to the Octy I had in this department. I must admit I noticed the road noise but it never bugged me enough to want to sell.

Tyres will help. Goodyear Eagle F1 Assymetrics were the best for me and F1's, bith quieter than the original Contis.

They're all like that, sir...

Mine's on 18"s and is pretty noisy, but it's a compromise I'm prepared to make for the look of it. Wife's A4 on 17" wheels and higher profile tyres is approximately 8 million times less noisy.

You pays your money and takes your choices I guess. Maybe he should have test-driven it a little more thoroughly - although if he's got the money to change a car just because he thinks it's a bit noisy then maybe it's not such a massive problem...

The road noise/tyre roar produced by my Octy II vRS TFSI is about the only fault I have found with the car (in nearly 3 yrs) and yes it was so great that I very nearly sold the car because of it.

Main points for me are:

1) all things are relative. I had a 120d before which produced NO tyre roar at all so cabin was practically silent even at 80mph, hence I really noticed when I switched to the Octy

2) the factory fit Bridgestones are ridiculously noisy on broken surfaces - just completle crap. Swap to 4 Goodyear Eagle F1 assymetrics and the roar is much reduced (but does not dissapear)

3) the Octy is £5k cheaper than any comparable VW or Audi because inevitable savings were made in some depts and sound proofing is definately one of them

4) the Octy is absolutley fantastic value for money considering the pace, practicality and quality you get for your cash

Cant say i've been too upset by the level of road noise. I do, however have a guaranteed fix:

What you need to do is run your hand from the top of the dashboard, down the centre console. Sooner or later you will come to a little sticky out knobbly bit in the middle of the stereo. Turn it gently to the right until the road noise is gone.

Simples. :)

I might go crazy with some Brown Bread or Dynamat at some point too :)

I think adding this around the rear of the car, wheel arches etc could make a considerable difference.

Quite right though as a general rule - you will find more sound deadening material in a VW or Audi.
