want the best of both worlds - suspension

Featured Replies

I dont want to kill a kitty as ive searched through the forum to find my answer but what im after is new springs /shocks or even coilovers to give better handling and drop it a bit BUT want the ride to be like standard or even better!

Is there a good setup for the vrs that would give me this... or is the best setup the standard one, dont want to get a lower suspension if it means a worse ride than standard as the roads near mine are not that great.

thanks

Hey man

I put Eibach springs on mine, lowered it nicely, and didnt worsen then ride at all. Coilovers are for tracks mate. So suggest springs and shocks.

Thats my view, i'm sure you'll get mixed reviews come in very soon.

Good luck anyway

I would say you want Koni FSD dampers and Eibach springs.

By definition the Eibachs give a stiffer ride with less travel than the standard springs. All the FSDs do is to give a differential rate of damping to the way the shocks react in corners or a straight line. In a straight line, the damping is very soft and fluid. In corners, the damping is quite firm.

If you want better handling with the same compliance as the standard suspension then get a Jabbasport Rear anti-roll bar as that will significantly reduce body roll in the bends, but give you the same comfort on the straights. It's also quite a lot cheaper than a full suspension upgrade and you can try it first then get stiffer springs and differential rate dampers at a later date.

coilovers :D

springs just dont cut it plus they only lower slightly

thanks for everyones responses..

think ill get a rear arb and go from there.

Coilovers are better for track days then and wont be as smooth a ride than standard set up i take it..

coilovers are pretty stiff, even on smooth roads

not necessarily true, I had Eibach's on my mk1 Focus and because they're progressively wound they were softer & smoother than standard when bimbling through town but firmer when pressing on - it was a best of both worlds kinda of a deal when you're talking just lowering springs.

:)

I’ve got Eibach’s with stock dampers on my car and although the ride is acceptable it’s a little under damped for liking. My mate has a VRS (Rallyslag3) and his is running coilovers and the ride is surprisingly good. I think if you pick a decent set of coilovers with adjustable damping and pick the right spring rate you’ll get a reasonable ride out of it.

I've got the eibach springs and dampers. I think now that it's done 30K, the dampers are going off a bit, hence it's all got a little too crashy.

My Impreza has a more supple ride and that's on 225/35x18s!

Mmm :rubchin: sounds like you need the FSD`s to me

It depends how low you're wanting it really but personally for everyday road use we prefer a good springs and shocks setup. As said, the FSD's and Eibach's are a good choice.

To the purveyors of suspension products:

What would you recommend for a 58-reg Fabia II (5J) 1.9TDi Estate? All the websites I have looked at only list suspension parts for the Fabia I (6Y) models.

I am looking for something that will tighten up the handling, including lowering it moderately, but I don't want to end up with something that looks too boy-racer, and although handling is important to me, I also don't want the ride to be compromised too much (it's definitely much too soft and soggy on standard suspension, though).

One thing to add is that the standard front ARB is 20mm dia - do these come in different sizes - what is the VRS for example, and does it fit on the 5J models?

Koni: KONl Finder

Koni do some for your car

Eibach do too , springs and shockers

Then you can go on to coilovers......

Do you have a price in your head?

Price - a few hundred pounds (ish). I don't know how much to expect it to cost at present because I can't find enough info about these products on the web.

For example, the Eibach website(s) appear to be totally information-free. One of them only lists parts for a very small range of cars, and the other one, apart from being mainly in German, doesn't seem to list any info at all.

The Koni site does appear to list a couple of products for the Fabia 5J but I can't see if they're full spring/damper kits or just one or the other. There is also no further information for them such as how much lowering they do or how they cope with the fact that the weight of the car must be very different with different engines fitted.

I'm sure this information is available, I just can't find it from the resources I have seen so far!
