Back to basics

Featured Replies

following on from my my remap lastweek, just thought i'd let you lot know I got the remap removed from my ecu and it was put back to the original standard file.

I'm going to do more research on it before i consider taking the plunge again. this is the first time i've felt the info or indeed the situation was a "grey area"

To recap on what happened, I asked "supplier 1" to give me a mild remap(on my bog standard vrs) and they agreed they could give me an output of 160bhp approx and 270lb/ft to make things clutch and insurance friendly. Supplier 1 did not have a rolling road, and there method involved downloading my ecu file, emailing it off to someone else, then tweaking it then uploading it back on.... but having read comments on here about similar companies doing this, this did not seem a big issue as loads of you had done it this way and been happy with the gains as advertised or quoted.

After remap Car started smoking badly so took it to a more local supplier (i'll call them supplier 2) who had a rolling road. I did not mention the smoking but told them i was keen to find out what my vrs was producing on the RR as i'd recentl got it remapped. They put it on the rr and I ended up with 184bhp and 342lb/ft. I was present while they did the RR and she smoked like hell when it reached 4k. The results were totally surprising as I'd asked for a clutch friendly mild remap but apparently according to supplier 2's results I was pulling 342lb of torque at about 2700rpm and even at At 4000rpm it is 240lb/ft torque(which could cause it to overfuel and smoke).A bit of black smoke is normal but this was more than just abit.

Supplier 2 told me that the results were verygood but that it should be tuned down a bit to stop the excessive smoking and they suggested i speak to supplier one and get it more in line with what i wanted and that they (supplier 2) wasn't trying to get me to come to him instead as doesnt want to get involved in those "he said, they said" type arguments, although if supplier 1 let me down again they could get the figures to what i want, but it would take a few goes on the RR to get the curve right as i want it.He printed me off a copy of the graph and i went back to supplier one. Was very annoyed as had to take another day off work and drive up to see them again.

To cut along story short supplier1 kindly refunded my money and put my original file back.I asked what went wrong and apparently "supplier 2" being a competitor had tweaked the rolling road results to make them (supplier one) look bad. The motive being to steal business away from them.

I was pretty surprised at this as I never mentioned to supplier two what results i expected or had asked for so as far as they were concerned i was just curious about the numbers and it was actually supplier 2 that suggested I go back to supp1 to get it rectified.

I asked supplier one whether its possible the car was already remapped but apparently it wasnt as my ecu file was standard and the mapper would have picked up on it.

Supplier one offered to de-tune the map as an option, but i declined as i thought to myself...if they are so sure there's nothing wrong with their map and the results provided by supplier 2 are hokey, then why offer to "de-tune" something that is "evidently" correct?

So afterall that, its been a very expensive experience for me. £60+vat for the rolling road session, £35 in fuel, plus using holiday to get it sorted. One of the suppliers pointing the finger at the other and i'm not sure who to believe, but the bottom line is one of them hasnt been very professional

Its left me with quite a bitter aftertaste of which tuners to trust, but if I do decide to go for a remap again i'll choose someone with a rolling road and one who can give me a custom map, and not an estimate of what they think it will be as that in my opinion is not good enough. I know loads of you have used remappers who dont give you a before and after RR but if you're happy and you dont mind it, thats all that matters.

Sounds like you've had an absolute nightmare, I'd always be wary of getting work done on mine unless they've been recommended by someone! I think the Briskoda Partners, i.e. Unit 18, Awesome, etc would take some beating for customer satisfaction after reading numerous threads on here, no-one has a bad word to say about them. I just wish they were based in the North-East. :D

Hope you have a better experience if you get it done in the future!...

thanks mate I should have considered those options, but maybe next time if i have the guts.

both suppliers i dealt with are sponsors on the vw/audi and/or seat forums but even then have to be careful. I wont post the names on a public forum as i know people can get upset.

I know all the parties involved (although not directly involved with the job as your not one of our customer) and it suprises me that you didnt get what you wanted. I wouldnt have bothered with the RR'd tbh, if you werent happy with the smoke/map anyhow there wasnt any need. I would take my gut instinct over a RR'd graph anyday. There are just so many variables in setting one up they can be very missleading.

Well done for not mudslinging though.

I'll defo keep that in mind about the RR graph if they(supplier2) were intending to mislead me thats not at all professional in my book, but i guess it happens whatever line of works involved

I dont have a problem with any of the suppliers but i think this left me with more questions than answers on the value of rolling roads and who to trust. I used to belong to the ford forum(6 years a member) before i bought my skoda and they were always giving the importance of RR and it was the ultimate in terms of getting a true bhp/torque...then i come on here and people's opinions are very different.lol. I guess i maybe brainwashed with the RR mentality.

The question is, who can you trust with rolling roads?

Anyone who maps cars (or has had a map done) knows that the maps take a few journeys to improve and settle, so if the company who maps your car gives you a RR straight away, and the power is 40% improved, can you trust that this is actually true? If it is 40% improved 10 mins after the new map is written, then will it be 60% stronger once its settled? I doubt it personally on a standard car.

Then theres the flip side.. you take a car from one remap company to another who has a rolling road, and expect them to give you correct figures. How do you know they aren't giving you info that will encourage you to go with them for a 'better' map and make the results for their maps look better than the first one?

From personal experience i would find a highly regarded company with a good reputation, speak to them about what you want and expect, and then not worry about what a set of rollers tell you, only how the car responds on the road and how it feels. Who drives to work on a set of rollers anyway??
