Changing brake fluid +

Featured Replies

Hello,

I will be booking the car in for 2 years brake fluid change and I don't think the pads need changing yet -about 70% left. However I'm not sure if I should also do the clutch, gear or are they all the same system.

Any advice? Thanks

Clutch and brake fluid are shared.

Thanks Chirs for the reply. Should I do the gear oil?

Hmm, the reservoir is shared but not all the fluid. If you want that changed it would mean bleeding the clutch system. Not safety related but IMHO worthwhile doing if you have a pressure bleeder on the car already.

Gear oil doesnt have a interval for changing, should be good for the life of the box. Do you have an issue?

Unless it's done starship miles in 2 years, don't worry. It might be worth thinking of at 80-100K.

I dont know if I have one. Would it be economical to do with brake fluid change? How much?

Thanks for the adice.

Pressure bleeders are essentail to do any brake or clutch hydraulic work on these modern cars.

Ask and see if they want to charge anymore for doing it, personally I wouldnt charge anymore to do it, its not essentail but IMHO worth doing.

Thanks Lummox

Lummox,

what are pressure bleeders, are they bleed nipples?. Has anyone with an earlier Fabia ,used an 'Easybleed' which uses a tyre pressure to push the fluid through when replacing brake fluid, and had success, please?. The reason I ask is that Lummox ,in the past has mentioned ' possibility of reversing the seals in the master cylinder'.

An Easy bleed is a simple pressure bleeder.

One man operations, brake fluid is pressurised in the reservior and they you open up a nipple to bleed out. The reservior is kept full by the equipment.

Hi Lummox,

thanks for reply. How do you rate them?.I realise a professional one like 'Sealey' is a better bet. Out of interest ,do you wait for the fluid to change colour ,or estimate when 'new' fluid should be coming out the nipple, by volume?

There's a risk of that is you don't use a pressure bleeder. The problem with that is that you can push the brake pedal further than it's normal travel, which can reverse the seals.
