Bought a MFD - where to get it fitted?

Featured Replies

I just bought a MFD off eBay and I've never changed a radio or anything in a car.

I went to a local car electronics place and they reckoned it would be at least £100 because it "needs all sorts of codes from Skoda".

The advert says it has got the security code and connection cables...

I'm wondering where I can take it to be fitted or if anyone one here offers it as a service for some £££?

Or is it so easy I'm being a wuss not wanting to fit it myself? :D

This is a pic of it if its any help.

Thanks all

On the codes front, I *think* you do have to get in enabled with vagcom on your cars ecu?

A few people on here have installed these, hopefully one of them will pipe up :)

Did you get the Map CD with it?

Oh, and just as a note, unless you have the CD changer I don't think you can play a CD while in navigation mode, but I could be wrong.

I haven't done this myself, but I did watch Ross Clark (Lummox) do it and he made it look very easy. The only code you need is the 4-digit one that should come with the radio. Ross charged me £50 to fit it and it took about an hour. It probably would have taken less time than that but I had a phone kit fitted and he had to do a bit of manoeuvering to get all the cables back in behind the unit.

If you can get down to Milton Keynes area, I would highly recommend Unit 18 to do the work as they do a sterling job and they are significantly cheaper than a main dealer.

Things I discovered about the MFD;

1. The 'horse-pill' antenna works much better if you mount it above the dashboard.

2. It's well worth investing in a new Blaupunkt DX CD as some of the older ones are very much out-of-date (our house is about 6 years old and our 'new-build' street has only just appeared on the 2008/2009 CD.

3. You definitely can't play anything in the slot as it's a computer drive and you need the CD changer fitted to play audio CDs.

4. The red button on the plug'n'play cable disables the CAN-bus speed signal so you can watch DVDs on the move if you have a DVD player attached to the AUX signal

5. It's VERY accurate - given a good satellite signal it's good to about 10'/3m in town.

6. While it's no Tomtom, if you think about programming it, it's a very good SatNav unit.

7. DON'T get sucked into a complete retrofit with the in-dash display, TMC unit and multiple antennae - it'll cost hundreds and you may as well have just bought a double DIN Pioneer or Kenwood unit instead:rotz:

I agree with wja96. While its no tom tom, it does it job adequately enough. 2008/09 disc is must also.

I fitted my unit with my father's help. It was relatively hassle free although getting all the cables behind the unit was a PITA. The antenna definately needs to go on the top of the dashboard. I lost the signal after 2 weeks when it was fitted under the dash which meant taking the glovebox out again to reposition it!

Thanks all for your replies.

I've got a CD changer so hopefully no issues with playing CDs.

When you say above the dashboard, do you mean on top of it, on show? Isn't that a bit ugly!! Or have I misunderstood?

Not sure what CD it comes with as it was a bit of an impulse purchase on ebay and I haven't received it yet! Had a look for new CDs, woah they're expensive!! I'll see what it comes with and take it from there.

The factory fitted unit (£1800 option) cames with a completely different dashboard with a multifunction display in the middle. It will display radio and CD data and it also relays the last instruction from the MFD unit in the dashboard. I now have this working, together with TMC and the external antenna but it's cost me an absolute fortune.

In hindsight, I should have just bought an £800 Pioneer unit and been done with it.

Ahh the maxidot in the dashboard? No I can't even consider that it's just too much money!

When I did the upgrade the biggest issue was getting all the cables to fit behind so the unit would go in properly... just needs fiddling and jiggling about a bit ;)

Received it today. Do I need a special tool to get the old one out and......where exactly is the gps antenna meant to go? Thanks

Use a kenwood removal tool.

The antenna is magnetic so it will mount on the cross-beam under the dashboard behind the glovebox, but with mine mounted like that I could only get 4-7 satellites whereas with it mounted on a Kenwood 'ground plane' disc above the dash (tucked away behind the RFL holder) I can get anything upto 19 satellites and it initialises much quicker too.

My lord I have just put it in with the assistance of my uncle. I don't know what happened but it took us from about 4pm, till about half an hour ago.

It was a total pig to come out (due to me not reading fabokas post) and we sat there for about half an hour trying to get it out with a tool which had been used on a Octavias radio. Ended up going to Halfrauds and getting a Kenwood removal tool......it came out in 10 seconds.:o

Next up was getting the glovebox off. Luckily seen it needed a torx screwdriver and had bought one. That went ok. Then the side pillar trim to route the gps aerial. Thought I was going to snap it but it was ok once you realise how the clips work.

Then for the really fun part, trying to get the cables in such a way that the unit will push back far enough. Not sure if we were missing something or had big hands, but just couldn't get our hands far enough into the gap through to the back of the unit. This was behind the glovebox btw. I won't say what we had to do to get it to go in because people may scream (it involved a drill). :rotz:

After that it was all lovely, except for the glovebox now rattling. Somehow moving the rubber bung/stoppers helped and the rattle went.

Any pics of one of these baby's in the Fabia dash?
