Burning Smell

Featured Replies

Just purchased an Octavia Scout Tdi. All has been good so far but yesterday I noticed it seemed a little strange in mainly 2nd and once in 3rd gear. On occasion it seemed to give a sensation almost like the clutch was slipping for about the first 1500 rpm in these gears then would go back to normal beyond that. However there's no indication on the rev counter that it's doing that and if it was I thought it would be very apparent in the upper gears, it pulls normally here. Only did it about 3 or 4 times over about 11 miles. When I got home there was a strange burning smell in the boot when I opened it so I'm not sure if I have binding rear calipers or there's a problem with the Haldex system. The car's under warranty so not too worried but wonder if anyone has had something similiar.

The old model Octavias used to have a burning smell from the back left after it had been cruised for a while on the open road. Never found out what it was, but it didn't cause a problem in the 95,000 miles I had the car for. If the revs climb and the car doesn't accelerate in line with this increase then something in the drivetrain is wrong. If the car is new then get the clutch and brakes checked...

Have DPF? If so, it might just have regenerated before you stopped - this will occasionally cause a "something burning" smell towards the rear of the car. Obviously, as it's burning soot. :)
